Quanta / Signal / Noise is a new interactive work by Langham Research Centre.
This music presents a shift away from the conventional building blocks of music: melody, rhythm and harmony. Instead there is a focus on sound itself: its unfolding textures, shapes, energies and dynamics.
When using the manual variPlay interface, the piece shifts and changes. Intriguing auditory landscapes can be reconfigured and interchanged. Imaginary places, spaces and narratives unfold. Fluid sound canvases can be brushed, sketched and collaged.
With the automatic variPlay interface, the app itself generates new versions of the piece through algorithmic playback and user control.
This app enables users to create their own versions of a piece that reflects the innovative and inventive work done by avant-garde composers since the middle of the 20th century.
