Whether you’re brushing up on a foreign language, browsing an international website or helping a teen with homework, sometimes you need a quick translation.

Mate is as quick as it gets.

To use this lightweight menu-bar app, simply copy some text, click the Mate menu and paste. Mate is pretty good at detecting the source language, so you usually don’t even have to select one.

Enter a word and Mate provides a translation, as well as related terms in the language.

Want even faster results? Just copy some text and press Mate’s keyboard shortcut (Shift-Option-T by default). Or use Mate’s Safari extension: select any text on a web page and click the Mate button that appears to get an instant translation.

The app can also pronounce text for you and even provides transliteration of languages written in non-Roman alphabets.

Read websites published in almost any language with Mate’s Safari extension.

But Mate does more than just translate – it also teaches. Enter a single English word to see similar words and simple phrases in another language. For example, if you type “eat” and choose Spanish, you’ll see comer but also the Spanish words for consume (consumir) and devour (devorar).

Mate can translate from over 100 languages – so you can learn to say “I love you” in any tongue from Amharic to Zulu.
