Retro Highway

Pure arcade fun!

VIEW

Theres no mistaking the love for old 16-bit classics like Road Rash and Super Hang-On in this arcade-racing throwback.

It’s dripping with old-school visual tricks that players of a certain age will appreciate: that stripy road whizzing by, the pixelly sprites, and the roadside scenery looming into view over the horizon. Even the opening stage, Emerald Hills, sounds like something out of an old Sonic game.

You’re a motorcyclist going at full throttle throughout Retro Highway, so swerving in and out of traffic while picking up coins and power ups is what the game is all about.

Blaze through red lights and intersections like there’s no tomorrow.

Inevitably, you can’t keep it up forever; when you crash into the other vehicles on the track, or even if you hit a ramp and smash into the side of a bridge, your rider goes flying and comes down to earth with a bone-shaking crunch. Ouch. Start again.

Within each run, there are little missions to complete, like using your Nitro for a certain amount of time, triggering 10 ‘close calls’ or picking up a certain number of bonus items.

Weaving in and out of traffic is what Retro Highway is all about.

They make you think about how you play the game a little more than you might expect. And the more mini-missions you complete, the closer you get to opening up a new highway to race down.

The indie duo behind Retro Highway happily describe themselves as ‘decidedly unprofessional’. If this is what they produce without getting their act together, we hope they stay sloppy forever.
