How much sleep do you get per night? If the first thing that popped into your head was “not enough”, those recommended eight nightly hours probably seem like a far-off fantasy.

We all wish we were enjoying a bit more sleep, but how do your hours in the land of nod stack up against everyone else? Well, thanks to Sleep Cycle, we can now see.

Almost a million of the sleep tracking app’s users have opted to share their daily sleep stats, so it’s possible to see how you compare with the rest of the world when it comes to catching 40 winks. Or should that be 34 winks?

Sleep Cycle helps you understand exactly how much sleep you’re really getting.

In 2019, the average user clocked a surprisingly low seven hours and 12 minutes of nightly snooze. Interestingly, how much sleep you get varies greatly depending on your age, where you’re from and even your gender.

Across the globe, women sleep more, spending an average of seven hours, 23 minutes in bed per night – that’s 20 minutes more per night than men. But despite later bedtimes and earlier wake-up times, men tend to wake up happier. Using the app to record their mood first thing in the morning, men reported waking up happy 59 per cent – 3 per cent higher than their female counterparts.

Statistically, you’re likely to get the least amount of sleep when you’re in your forties, with nightly averages dropping to just over seven hours. But if you’re in your twenties, congratulations – this is the most sleep you’re ever going to get.

Record your wake up mood and sleep phases.

Want to see exactly how you stack up to these averages? With Sleep Cycle, leave your device on your nightstand in the evening and the app will track your sleep throughout the night before waking you at the optimal point in the morning.

And because sleep quality is as important as how much time you spend in the land of Nod, the app will even tell you how long you spend in restorative deep sleep. Now if you’ll excuse us, we’ve got some sleep to catch up on.
