GC Wasteland

The rich play golf in ruins

VIEW

This isn’t just any old golf game. GC Wasteland is, rather unexpectedly, a cutting social satire.

The game takes place on Earth, but it’s the planet after ecological meltdown. Nowadays, the rich return only to play golf.

A melancholic, apocalyptic vibe and vivid storytelling are what make GC Wasteland so special. Nostalgia FM is the soundtrack, a convincing fake radio station that plays songs from the ‘old days’, along with call-in short stories that are a window into this world. Tidbits of storyline are revealed between each hole, too.

Fore! Helmets are a must in this post-apocalyptic world. And not just for stray balls.

The actual gameplay starts off simple, letting you soak in the atmosphere. You just pull back to aim, whacking the ball over a decimated cityscape. While each hole has a ‘par’ score, you don’t see this tracked on-screen.

A dozen levels or so in, the courses become more complicated. You gradually realise it’s more of a platformer than a traditional golf game.

Deserted planet makes for great golf courses. Who knew?

Later, you’ll encounter mutated creatures and air jets that’ll blow your ball all over the place. And it all plays out amid ruined cities you know and love.

GC Wasteland is more than ‘just’ a golf game, then – its puzzles and narrative make it a more meaningful game than your average swingfest.
