HOW TO
Shoot retro videos
The camera on your iPhone and iPad is state-of-the-art, but you can choose to go for a more retro look. Why not let these apps give your footage a charming ’80s vibe – minus the neon leg warmers and feather cuts.
VHS Camcorder
As playful as it is full-featured, VHS Camcorder tweaks the hue, aspect ratio, and frame rate, and adds an onscreen time stamp. For a warm, vintage tone, try the Nuclear filter (found in the settings menu). Don’t forget to shake the camera as you film – it will add straight-out-of-the-’80s static lines to your movie.
VHS Glitch Camcorder
When you launch VHS Glitch Camcorder, you’re greeted with delightfully cheesy ’80s sound effects and graphics, which perfectly capture the type of video you can record with this app. Scroll through various effects as you film to alter colour balance and add simulated light leaks. The coolest feature? You can tap the screen as you film to add different video “glitches” to your recording.
Pixel Art Camera
For a side of wacky with your retro camera, check out Pixel Art Camera. This unique recorder pixelates your image and and makes everything look like it’s from an old videogame console. After shooting, desaturate your video to transform it into something you’d expect to see on a grayscale computer.
