Sometimes the difference between a good photo and a great one is just a single dial turn. The hard part is knowing which dial.

The ability to adjust the camera’s settings – shutter speed, aperture, ISO, white balance, focus – used to be left to professional DSLR cameras only. Now the DSLR Camera app makes manual adjustments and RAW image capture easy on your iPhone.

These advanced controls aren’t just for the Ansel Adamses of the world; they also help amateur photographers. DSLR Camera takes full advantage of iOS 12, offering augmented reality features and Siri shortcuts that’ll boost your collection of ‘5-star’ shots – and 4K video – right away.

To start, pick a mode: Automatic, Program or Manual. Automatic takes control of everything, whereas Program lets you adjust the exposure (say, sliding up to lighten up people when the sun’s right behind them, or sliding down to get a perfect birthday candle shot), then adjusts the camera settings on your behalf.

From Manual freedom to Auto perfection, DSLR Camera will make you feel like a real photographer.

Manual gives you control of it all: try sliding the shutter speed, ISO, and white balance to see how they work together. You can also adjust the focus – or, even better, hold down your finger on the spot you'd like to shoot and watch as DSLR Camera tracks that object as it moves in the frame. (Perfect for pets and children that won’t keep still.)

Working on your composition? You can view grids such as Rule of Thirds and Golden Ratio in augmented reality (AR) – and read helpful explanations of why these compositions work – then use them to frame your shot.

Click the settings gear in the corner for even more options, including the ability to capture in RAW, a type of unprocessed image that gives you more flexibility while editing with colours and grain reduction. And set up Siri Shortcuts: want to call up a quick shot? Teach Siri your phrase (“Take a selfie”) and never miss a moment again.

When you’ve got the perfect shot, DSLR Camera has an array of adjustments and 146 filters that make editing a breeze. Does 146 filters sound like too many? Don’t worry. The app uses artificial intelligence to pick out a selection it thinks will work best for your image.

Dial in the exposure and contrast, tweak the white balance if needed and add a little sharpening. Voilà: professional-caliber shots, without the bulky camera.
