Fallout Shelter

100 million people have played Fallout Shelter on mobile, PC, or Xbox One, according to the game’s publisher. If you’re not one of them, or if you haven’t tried the game since its debut, you owe it to yourself to get in on this.

The goal is to build and maintain a huge underground vault where people hole up to survive the irradiated wasteland outside. With all its quirks and complexities, it’s a fascinating place to manage.

On the one hand, you’ve got to make sure you have the right mix of restaurants, power generators, and water plants, and enough living quarters for current and future residents. Then there’s the goofier stuff—like dressing up dwellers in weird outfits, or matching couples and watching them spout eye-rolling pick-up lines. (“You’re like cholesterol, always messing with my heart.”)

Modeled off Fallout’s Vault Boy mascot, the cartoony art style plays right into the franchise’s snarky spirit. Don't be fooled by all the cheery expressions, though: you’ll have to work to keep people’s happiness ratings high. Like ensuring they’re in roles that fit their skills, and that they’re well-armed in case of sneak attacks by raiders and molerats.

Thanks to a steady stream of updates, this deep game has only gotten deeper, adding pets, crafting, and quests that let you explore (and loot!) other locations. Whether you’re clearing ghouls from a grocery or tinkering back at the vault, you’ll find loads of interesting things to do.
