I’m a professional actor from Helsinki, Finland. I want to share this very unfortunate, a real-life experience of a day in the life of a freelance actor.

Why am I sharing this review? I have personally reached out to all relevant parties in this miserable failure. What have I heard back? NOTHING.

At the center of the story is SELFCAST - a story that started unfolding on Wednesday Dec7th . I received the greatest news that any freelance actor could hope for: a message from SELFCAST that the producer from the production company had chosen me.

In other words, I got casted, booked and confirmed to do the “Finnish man”-part for an international - commercial. Soon followed warm congratulations on the booking and instructions to stay alert for further information.

Being a freelance actor also means that I have to have another job. However, having my priorities straight, I immediately cleared my other work calendar and wanted to start preparing for the upcoming production, including voice-over needed etc.

Following SELFCAST confirmation, my other work responsibilities cancelled, I was getting ready to act, and do it professionally. Two days later, on Friday Dec9th, I got worried that I had yet to receive any information on schedule, practicalities and logistics from the production for the upcoming week.

This is when all went catastrophically wrong: finally reaching a SELFCAST representative, I found out that they had booked and casted two men for the same part. They had also officially communicated with both of us for two days as if we were doing the commercial. What seems to be the sad explanation here from Selfcast? That both of our names happened to be Ville.

Mistakes may be made but should always then be fixed. However, on Friday afternoon a text-book example of avoiding responsibilities happened: SELFCAST called me and said that there is likely a communication issue within the production company or that this is someone else’s fault. The production companys? No. Mine? No way. Where did this casting error occur?

As a freelance actor, including clearing, cancelling and postponing all other scheduled work, this is not only financially but personally devastating. I want to understand who is responsible and how can we avoid such mistakes in the future.

I’m certain that there are other actors out there who have faced similar experiences as well. It’s not fair. Hopefully as many of you as possible will notice my story, share this and your own experiences as well. Acting market is tough, competitive and not an easy career path for anyone, and we deserve better. What am I looking for? Justice? Of course. Fairness? Absolutely. Compensation? Maybe. An answer? At the bare minimum. How is it going to be SELFCAST?
