3...2...1... and it’s off to the races at Langley Falls! Stewie Griffin is ahead early. Peggy Hill tries to make a pass – only to slip on golden poop left by Terry the alien! Then Peter Griffin hop-drifts a corner to secure a sweet first-place finish.
Just another trek around the track in Warped Kart Racers.
Starring familiar faces from Family Guy, King of the Hill, American Dad and Solar Opposites, this Apple Arcade speedster combines slick kart-racing fun with hefty fan service. From deep-cut character skins (Brian’s banana suit) to customisable karts (Hank’s prized lawn mower with a Strickland Propane antenna), there’s loads to unlock as you skid through multiplayer matches.
We spoke to Nicholas Lovell, game director at developer Electric Square, for an insider look at what each show brings to the action.
Family Guy
Speed cred: With a cast that includes a diabolical baby and an anthropomorphic dog, Family Guy is perfectly suited for a wacky kart racer.
Insider insight: Superfans might catch some blink-and-you’ll-miss-it character animations. “Peter Griffin’s win animation is essentially his ‘Bird Is the Word’ dance,” says Lovell, referencing the beloved episode where Peter gets particularly enthusiastic about the 1963 classic Surfin’ Bird.
King of the Hill
Speed cred: When Hank Hill isn’t selling propane and propane accessories, you can catch him sipping a cold one with his neighbours on the curb of his suburban street. You’ll cruise through that very spot in Warped Kart Racers – and it’s a good pick if you’re still getting the hang of the pavement.
Insider insight: “Arlen Suburbs, our opening track, has big sweeping turns which are very forgiving – so if you’re not good at cornering, it’s a great track to play,” advises Lovell.
American Dad
Speed cred: What’s a kart racer without bombastic power-ups? And what’s more bombastic than American Dad?
Insider insight: One power-up based on the hit show is not to be missed: “If you hear the screaming eagle of the Culture Pod, get off the centre line,” says Lovell. “It’s going for the first player on the track and if you’re in the way, it will hit you.”
Solar Opposites
Speed cred: Solar Opposites may be the freshman show of the bunch, but that doesn’t dampen its need for speed.
Insider insight: “Our animator is a huge Korvo fan and was desperate to get the magician character into the game,” says Lovell. Lo and behold, the season 1 episode arc makes a grand entrance as an alternate skin. Korvo the magician, ta-da!
