Description

YouTube does not support 4K playback in Safari for some videos. 4Ktube Extension shows a 4K badge in Safari toolbar if a YouTube video you’re watching offers quality higher than 1080p. Click the toolbar button to open the video in another web browser and enjoy it in full 4K glory.

This way you can open any page (not just YouTube videos) in Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Opera or another app.

You don’t even need a 4K TV or monitor to benefit from this app. Most modern MacBook and iMac models have native resolution higher than 1080p. You also get higher video bitrates and crispness on any display.

Skip current video ad: click the toolbar button while holding Fn key.

How to Play 4K YouTube Videos:

Google uses VP9 and AV1 video codecs for YouTube videos that have quality higher than 1080p. Safari does not support some of those videos. To play such YouTube videos in HDR, 1440p, 2160p or higher quality you’ll have to use a different web browser.

How to Use 4Ktube:

• Download and open 4Ktube app.
• Click “Show in Safari Preferences” button.
• Enable “4Ktube” extension in Safari Extension Preferences.
• Select which browser you’d like to open links in:
Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Opera or any other app that can handle it.

Now, when you watch YouTube videos in Safari, the extension will let you know if there’s 4K quality available. Look out for the 4K badge on the toolbar icon. Click it to continue watching a 4K version of the video in another app.

You can open any page in another browser this way. Shift-click the toolbar button to also close the page in Safari when you open it in elsewhere. This can be set as the default behavior in the app preferences. Option-click the toolbar button to open 4Ktube Preferences.

What’s New

Version 1.2

• Fixed 4K detection due to recent YouTube changes.
• Updated for macOS Big Sur and new Macs with M1 chip.

@aylwardreed ,

Works EXACTLY as described!

I'm so sick of reactionary 1 star reviews from people who don't read the actual app description.

The description for this says "4KTube Extension shows a 4K badge in Safari toolbar if a YouTube video you're watching offers quality higher than 1080p. Click the toolbar button to open the video in another web broswer and enjoy it in full 4K glory."

The extension works EXACTLY like that.

At no point does it say it enables 4K in Safari. Safari doesn't allow 4K YouTube. That is Apple's/Google's fault.

If you read the description and think you could use this then I can highly recommend. It works perfectly. If you don't like the price, fair enough, dont buy it. Just don't buy it THEN say it's too expensive and give it 1 star.

Great app/extension!

(Side note: it doesn't always start playing in 4K when I launch in Chrome. There are no settings in YouTube to set a default bitrate so just take note when you switch browsers as to what rate it is set for that video)

Developer Response ,

Thank you for your support. Really appreciate it!

Is this a joke?

False advertising! If i wanted to use another browser, I would use one.

Developer Response ,

Hi! Having to use another browser is prominently stated in the app subtitle, screenshots and the description. There’s no claim it will play in Safari and I explain why in the description. Please let me know what information you consider “false advertising” so I could clarify it.

Switches to Chrome, but still no 4K

Waste of money. Does not work as advertised - opens chrome, but no 4k.

Developer Response ,

Hi! Does the extension erroneously detect 4K quality, but 4K is not available in Chrome? Please contact me by email so I could investigate the issue.
