An easy, bug-free, simple introduction to learning Arabic words

If you're looking to build your Arabic vocabulary then this app will be very helpful. I would recommend it as a companion to a course or for someone who wants to refresh their knowledge. I'm not sure how well this would work for someone with no knowledge of Arabic at all not because of any failing of the app but simply because Arabic pronunciation is so different from English that I think an absolute beginner would struggle. But of course, that's just my feeling.

The way it works is it shows you a picture of an object with both the Arabic word and phonetic English underneath it and the word is spoken aloud. You can repeat the recording of the man saying the word as often as you want. Then you move on to the next picture. You usually learn four to six new words and they're all grouped in logical groups, eg: body parts, transport, numbers etc etc.

What I like about his app is the freedom it gives you to study whatever you want at whatever pace you want. You can choose which word groupings you want to learn and you can go back over as many times as you want. At the end of each word grouping is a series of about eight quick tests, checking whether you've learnt the words. Again, you can do these tests as many times as you want or skip them totally, as you wish. There is no score, so no pressure.

Things you should know:
In the default setting you NEED to be able to read Arabic. If you can't, not a problem, the developers have thought of this: the first thing you do is to go to settings (menu top left) and change this. Because I can read Arabic I haven't done this and so can't say how or whether this would adversely affect your learning - especially in the tests, most of which need you to either read a word in Arabic or write it.

The home page layout is initially confusing. Eventually it becomes clear and is very easy to use: it's three rows of options and you have to select one option on each row to go ahead. The top row is a list of main subjects (eg: people, transport etc) and the second row is a sub-subject (eg: in the 'people' section, the sub-subjects include body parts, emotions, family etc). The third row is a selection of ways to learn the new words, eg: writing them, listening to them, seeing pictures of them etc.

I'm not sure what Arabic dialect they're teaching. I'm hoping its standard modern Arabic. It would be nice if the developers could clarify that.

I like that this app is free. I'm in the beginner section and there doesn't seem to be limitation (yet) on the number of words I can learn or how long I can use it. To access more words they say you can either pay, or you can collect points in the app (called flowers) to buy more words. They don't say how many flowers you need to access more levels so I can't say how feasible this is.

There aren't limitations to how you learn. Yes, there are tests at the end of each set of words, but there's no pass or fail and these tests have no bearing on whether you can go on to learn new words. You can go over and over again on a section, or you can skip bits or you can jump around as you please. It's totally up to you.

This is an app to teach you Arabic vocabulary and as such, it does a really great job. Obviously what it won't do is teach you Arabic grammar or how to use these new words in a sentence.

This app loads quickly, runs easily and is clearly and logically presented. It doesn't carry any advertising and doesn't demand money from you. I'd highly recommend it to anyone trying to improve their Arabic.
