Robust dependable UPnP/DLNA player

I purchased 8player Pro to play music (FLAC files) from my Netgear ReadyNAS drive to my Marantz network player connected to my hi-fi system. Having tried most of the UPnP/DLNA players available, I was presently surprised at how well the app worked. It finds the servers available and connects easily, shows the renderers available to play on and just works. There are so many players around that are just “flakey”. 8player Pro has proven to be a robust, dependable player. The user interface is good and intuitive, although there is room for improvement on selecting music for the playback queue and creating a playlist. Hence only 4 stars.I did have an issue initially with getting the app working properly with my Marantz renderer but the support was excellent and helped me resolve the problem. Full marks for the support, which proves it is a live, improving app.

iPhones don’t have a great selection of DLNA players, but this one is better than most. One gripe is the way it sorts tracks in an album: alphabetically. You can solve this in the settings by changing to sort by track number or to not sort at all, but then you lose the A-Z navigation in the artist/album list. That means a lot of scrolling if you have a large music collection.

iPhones don’t have a great selection of DLNA players, but this one is better than most. One gripe is the way it sorts tracks in an album: alphabetically. Gapless music playback is back!

This has been a great music player and plays all my hi res files from my NAS to just about any player that is on my home network. Unfortunately for a while gapless music playback was gone but now it’s back so I’ve edited my review. This player is so versatile - I really like it. A huge plus is being able to download music from my NAS to the app to play on the go - not many apps out there that do this.

It also handles photos with ease which is often missing from other apps. Having struggled to get my iPad to display the contents from the Media Streamer on my Mac, 8player pro is a joy to use and I wholeheartedly recommend it to others.
