Description

Did you know there's also an Air Display app in the iOS App Store that turns your iPad or iPhone into a Mac monitor?

Note: The host software requires an Intel-based Mac.

Air Display lets you use a spare Mac’s screen as an extra display for your main Mac.

It's easy to use! Just launch this app on your spare Mac, then connect to it from the free host app on your main Mac, to instantly expand its screen real estate. You can connect wirelessly or with a cable.

IMPORTANT: This is NOT the free Air Display host software that you need on your main computer. You can download that at avatron.com/gethost. This is the client app that turns one Mac into a second monitor for another Mac.

–– FEATURES ––

• Drag windows, apps, or control palettes from your main screen to give yourself more room to work
• Use up to 4 devices simultaneously to extend or mirror your computer
• Run either full-screen or in a window
• Either extend your screen to get more room to work or mirror to share your screen with an audience
• Connect via Wi-Fi or with a wired connection (Ethernet, Thunderbolt, or USB-C)

–– INSTALLATION ––

Just install the free Air Display host app (from avatron.com/gethost) on your main Mac, and download this Air Display client app on your second Mac.

• Purchase this app on the Mac you want to use as your second display
• On your main computer, go to avatron.com/gethost and install the free host app
• You can install this app onto multiple Macs, as long as they use the same Apple ID

If you want to use your iPad or other device as your second screen, you do not need to purchase this app. Air Display for iOS is available in the iTunes App Store (and you’ll still need the same free host software on your main computer).

–– COMPATIBILITY ––

• Both computers must be on the same Wi-Fi network, or connected via Ethernet, Thunderbolt, or USB-C
• Mac client app: macOS 10.8 and above
• Mac host: macOS 10.10 and above (not compatible with macOS 10.13.4–10.13.6)
• The Air Display host software is not compatible with Windows

What’s New

Version 3.4.2

• Added more resolutions for different Mac displays.
• Fixed sleep prevention while connected; it wasn't working on Mojave and Catalina.
• Fixed some other bugs.
• The latest Host software fixes a bug that could make the mouse invisible while mirroring displays.
• To enjoy the new features and bug fixes, please “Check for Updates“ in the Air Display Host software on your Mac.

Just too slow

Great idea but on my setup just made my computer unusable.

Decent app for one extra monitor

Air Display itself works well to allow my MBP 13” to link via a Mac Mini to run an additional third external screen, on top of the two that the MBP is capable of supporting via Thunderbolt, although the combination of Air display and Microsoft Remote Desktop does appear to work the MBP hard.

Air Display only allows the use of one external screen via another Mac and it would be good if it could add support for a portrait mode display on a Mac, as it already does on iOS.

Most importantly, it needs a mechanism to save the monitor set-up, rather than having to play around in Settings / Display when one adds the additional Air Display screen. This should be a Mac OS feature anyway, but it currently requires a couple of minutes of fiddling whenever one adds the extra Air Display to the three physical screens already in use.

Air Display worked fine via my wifi set-up, without any discernible lag, but is now working via Thunderbolt cable between the two Macs.

It can be a little awkward to trigger the Dock when it is set up to appear and hide automatically.

Annoyingly, using Air Display appears to prevent using Apple Watch to unlock the host Mac, the MBP in my case. I have therefore installed the third-party app Unlox, which allows one to unlock the Mac via a specific tap pattern on the mouse.

Impressed with the recent updates

Latest versions have genuinely impressed me (Host 3.2.1 and Display 3.3); lag now seems to have been drastically reduced; certainly a useful product, fit for purpose. Host machine is an 11" Macbook Air, so extra screen real estate is alwasy going to be a bonus; in my circumstances this is provided by an elderly 2009 Mac Pro and 20" cinema display. Macbook Air/Host is running Catalina and the installation was a little fiddly, but I gather that's Apple's uber-security systems at play rather that the fault of the developer. The two different apps aspect for the host and display: I get it, but can see how this might confuse some. Should also point out that the developer is very speedy and informative in sorting out issues and bugs; many thanks for that.
