Alipay is a leading open platform for payments and digital services in China.
Users with a Chinese ID and bank account can use Alipay to make payments online and in person at various merchants outside of China as they travel for leisure, business, or study.
Foreign visitors to China can connect their credit card to take advantage of Alipay’s widespread acceptance by tens of millions of merchants across the country. Alipay is not designed or intended for use by foreign users in their home country or anywhere outside of China.
With the users' permission this app can connect to Health [HealthKit] to enable users to participate in walkathons and make donations via the "sports" service. This feature is designed for use by Chinese users in China. It is not necessary to enable this feature to make payments.

Ratings and Reviews
Absolutely useless
I gave them an extra star as initial setup is more straightforward than WeChat, however it will randomly block your card when doing mini-app transactions or scan-to-pay transactions and then take money from your back-up account without telling you. Customer support is worse than useless as I need to upload a bank statement to unlock my account which is being rejected. I would say to avoid like the plague but unfortunately AliPay is a necessity for paying for things in China.
So much better than ApplePay in general
As ApplePay is not at all widespread in China, Alipay is even a better way to pay for literally everything. Every government and private services are well integrated into one big platform, this is what I miss in ApplePay. I use it to pay for my insurance, rent, tuition fee, bills, taxis, phone, food etc, you can name it. In order to add UK bank account you need to register with a Chinese one first. Although when using UK bank account exchange rates are quite bad and there’s a 9% transaction fee on top of that.
Outstanding Payment App for China
Alipay is one of the two main cashless payment systems used in China and unlike its main competitor, it’s easy to set up.
It accepts multiple forms of ID, including the Chinese green card, doesn’t constantly ask you to confirm your identity when you’re trying to make a purchase and is widely accepted for both payment and receiving money.
