Not enough words
It’s weird to complain that a dictionary doesn’t have enough words, but my problem with this dictionary is that it consistently doesn’t have the right words for the german language around me.
Added to that, search is slow and painful. It’s supposed to have a bunch of “near-term” search functions, but I have never found them to work. You have to type in the words you are looking for, pretty much precisely.
The examples of the words in use are good… but not precisely useful. Like the time I had to pay a bill at the library and nearly ended up asking to pay a “Schnabel” because that was the first word under bill in the English translation.
Frankly, this app cost a lot, but it’s not as useful as the paper version, which costs less, or as flexibel as the internet dictionaries, which are free. I don’t feel like this is a good purchase for anybody.
Got it, used it.
This is more of a dictionary for a german speaking person learning English than vice versa. There are no verb conjugations. Can't find a verb by entering it's past or perfect form. Nouns don't have plurals. Can't upgrade to a pro version at the moment. You have to buy it separately. But the interface is very good. My advice is try a Leo app first. It's free.
Langenscheidt Standard Wörterbuch English
Good dictionary but needs German verb conjugation function and a “direction of search” indicator on the top header toolbar … ie: German<>> English / English<>German - like the Collins version by Ultralingua. Excellent hyperlink functions and all other functions seem to work well. I only have an iTouch at the moment so cannot review the iPad version.
Perhaps a little pricy compared to others but probably has a greater content being licensed to Langenscheidt.
