How can computers learn to recognize birds from sounds? The BirdNET research project uses artificial intelligence and neural networks to train computers to identify nearly 3,000 of the most common species of North America and Europe. You can record a file using the internal microphone of your iOS device and see if BirdNET correctly identifies the probable bird species present in your recording. Get to know the birds around you and help us to collect observations by submitting your recordings.

BirdNET is a joint project of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Chemnitz University of Technology.

Good but…

Simple to use, and I’ve found it to be the most reliable. However, it feels like a bit of a 1 way research street. It would be great if the “explore your area” / Select a bird actually allowed you to play back a selection of the audio recordings rather than just take you to Wikipedia. That would help me learn as well as you train your model.

Fab app but...

This app is great and has enabled me to record and learn lots of bird songs. However the 2 recent updates have wiped all my recordings :( They are still listed, but the actual recording time is 0 and they won’t playback. Please could you see if this can be fixed? Then it would be a truly brilliant app! Thank you very much

Excellent app

Very impressive app that seems to be very reliable. Highly recommended especially as its available for free. Much better that the paid alternatives. I especially love the spectrogram which is useful for isolating the bird song from the recording.
