Description

The best and most complete birding app for South America!

No continent supports a bigger and more varied bird population, more than 3,000 species belonging to more than 100 families are presented in this app.

This is the only app that describes all the species of birds regularly found in South America!

All bird names are included in English, Latin, and the major languages spoken in South America (Spanish, Portuguese, French) as well as in many other languages, including Japanese, Chinese, Russian, etc.

In addition to the bird descriptions and images the app presents an ornithological dictionary with thousands of special terms and their explanations (English, Spanish, Portuguese, French) as well as high-quality drawings and explanations of bird anatomy and topology in English, French, and Spanish.

The current app contains descriptions of more than 3,100 bird species. All images are contained within the app for complete offline use of the app in the field where there might be no internet connection..

This version of the app contains more than 5,000 bird images, only very few species (8) are currently without image!

The app runs completely offline, there is no need for an internet connection during usage of the app (except for the backup/restore operations for Field Notes to/from the server).

Oh dear

I was looking for an app to help me with the ID of birds in Peru. This app looked ideal, but it's not! It is just not complete. The layout has the potential to be good but the content is lacking. Take for example the family of "gulls and terns". There are 38 species listed but only one image. Useless. Humming birds has 244 species but only 28 with images. It is near impossible to ID a bird just from a description. I am sure that the designers will update the images when and if they get them, but this should not have been released as it is.
I recently purchased "Costa Rica birds" by BirdingFieldGuides. Wonderful. Many birds have several images, there is a facility to add your own notes and to date time and place for your sightings.
IMD would do well to look at this app for the right direction. Maybe they have taken on a project that is too big for their present resources?
So only one star at present. I hope I can alter this in the future as the number of images increases

Oh dear, have you ever updated the app and checked it out now? Obviously not... or why haven't you updated your comment?

Excellent for the price

I was struggling to find a suitable book on birds for a holiday in Brazil. The only book I found for Brazil was on Passerines; it looked beautiful and cost £40. One book that was recommended was Birds of Venezuela but I could only find old, second hand copies. Then I found this app and thought "it is only £5.99, why not?" and I am very glad I bought it.
The descriptions are short, the index takes a bit of working out and you can only search for a bird in it's family so it can be difficult to find a bird you don't recognise but I I found it very useful and comprehensive. I used the "Add to favourites" function to create a list of birds I had seen so I could learn more about them when I got home.

Improving all the time

I thought I would risk buying this as I don't want to carry a physical book. It downloaded over 2000 pictures. It is not yet complete, for instance all the cuckoos were depicted but only a fraction of the hummingbirds. I'm not sure I like the pictures of the birds that are being held by the feet, but I suppose as long as it is being done carefully by an expert! I think the app will be a good resource on my holiday to Chile.
