Description

The British History Podcast is a weekly online show that details the chronological history of Britain in a conversational and accessible manner. This app is a companion to the show, which will enable you to stay up to date with episodes, take part in the social media communities, and even keep up with the listener forums!

What’s New

Version 1.3.3

This version of the BHP app has the following changes:

- The Forums view has been replaced with a Reddit view. The British History Podcast shut down the forum section of its website and that activity have moved over to Reddit. You can now access that through the BHP app.

- Some of the views and how they are displayed have been updated to work better on the new iPhone display sizes introduced since this app was last updated. As part of this and upcoming changes, the background image on the player view has been changed.

- There was a bug that caused the Description to be displayed twice. It has been fixed in this version.

A note concerning accessing BHP social media through this app - the Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit features of this app are intended to make the BHP social media available in one place, but are not the optimal ways to make use of or participate in those communities. Each of them offer apps and encourages use of those apps. But you can also ignore the "install the app" messages and access them through this app. It is your choice.

When you first use the Reddit view, it will prompt to use the app or the browser. In this case, select "browser" to view Reddit in the BHP app.

The British History Podcast

This podcast is superb. Jamie has undertaken the massive task of casting the WHOLE of British History. He does this on a weekly basis in a relaxed, witty and irreverent style. I stumbled on this by accident and within 3 episodes I was hooked. I dare you to try the same. Go ahead; take my challenge! I'm currently playing catch up and have reached the end of the C7th CE. That's about 3 years of weekly casts! 3 years folks! I still have over a hundred casts to go to catch up. Jamie offers all of this for free. He also has a cheap monthly members fee. This gains you even more in depth and specialist programmes. Brilliant. Utterly brilliant. Get on board, don't miss this train!

5/5 for content but the app lets it down

First of all, let me say that I LOVE the BHP - Jamie is an excellent narrator and you can tell that he has researched each and every episode, and spent a lot of time doing so. Also Producer Zee is a rockstar and I love when she turns up and they bounce ideas off each other.

I've been listening to the free podcast for a couple of years, and when I got up to date, I decided to become a member and paid for a year's membership. I decided to do this as I had enjoyed the clips and odd episodes that Jamie released every now and again.

Now while these episodes are still excellent, the app is not. I normally listen to my podcasts on the go, and so tend to download them at home and listen on the train. With the member's feed, it only streams and I just don't have the data for that. Then it will crash after I've listened to an episode, and I have to do and reopen the whole app. If it crashes in the middle of a show, or I have to pause halfway through, it doesn't store where I'm up to, so I have to guess. And finally it doesn't have a way to know which shows I've listened to, so I can miss some, and repeat others.

All in all, while I love the show, I hate the app, and this is what my rating is for. It makes listening to the member's feed a real faff.

Top podcast

I found this podcast when looking for some info on Alfred. I was initially irritated that a British history podcast was being narrated by an American, though that was short lived as I listened to all the podcasts about Alfred then went back to the start and listened to everything. This is a great podcast and I am sorry I had such bad thoughts about Jamie first time out. I am a religious listener now. Not literally, more agnostic/atheist in a literal sense, but religiously listen...you get it, right?
