Description

Learn your favorite songs without tabs or sheet music.

Whether you play for the world or yourself, all musicians need a good ear for harmony, melody, and rhythm. Using the songs in your music collection, Capo guesses the beats, chords, and key of songs to help you break them down to their individual parts. Capo’s unique technology helps you to learn your favorites quickly as you improve your ear along the way.

Capo is simple and yet so, so good, even the professionals use it:

“Capo is AMAZING!!! Very clutch. Especially when parts are kinda tough in the mix that I can’t make out easily. With other apps you lose quality, this still sounds correct.”
- Omar Edwards: Keyboardist/Music Director for Jay-Z, Rihanna, Kanye West, Eminem, and more

“When I sat down and started using Capo for the first time, I was amazed at how big a punch this little app packs! It's intuitive, convenient, and high-quality.”
- Rebecca Lovell: Lead Vocals, Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar, Mandolin, Piano for Larkin Poe

*** HEAR THE SONG ***
Slow down playback, scrub to hear specific notes, and easily create regions that loop as you learn to play the tricky parts. Use Capo’s tools to isolate specific instruments and even vocals to learn any part of a song. With a couple simple switches, you can focus on the piano or eliminate everything to practice the guitar solo and make transcription easier.

*** BREAK IT DOWN ***
Capo automatically detects chords, beats, and the key of songs to get you started. Change, add, or remove the detected chords easily with a few taps as you identify alternate chords and voicings. Use Capo's structure song view to edit Capo's beat grid for songs with changing, or uncommon time signatures.

*** PAUSE THE SESSION (PRO) ***
With an active subscription, Capo saves the loop regions you set, chord changes, and even the playback position into Projects. Learn songs at your own pace and revisit them on all your devices using iCloud.

*** SO MUCH MORE ***
* Transpose songs to different keys
* Rename regions to keep organized
* Use the Tabbing song view to quickly capture solos and melody
* Beat detection estimates the tempo and helps snap regions
* Edit chords one at a time or globally
* Display chord diagrams for Guitar, Banjo, Mandolin, Ukulele, Bass, and now Piano
* Rock on southpaws! Capo has a left-handed chord box option
* Five different metronome sounds

**NOTE**: Capo works with music you own, but cannot access streaming tracks from Apple Music, Spotify, etc.

*** GO PRO ***

Excellent for working out guitar solo parts

This application is aimed primarily at guitarists and players of other fretted instruments, but check out the videos on the developers site for other things people are actually using it for (education, singing, inspiration for composing). It’s excellent for working out guitar solo parts - you can use your ears, the spectral analysis, or both. The isolation engine allows you to home in on the guitar part (or indeed any other part) on stereo recordings making it easier to hear. When you have it worked out, then you can mute the solo part and play along (at whatever speed you want) effectively creating your own -1 track. Export your work as a midi file, then import it into a DAW or music writing software - hours of fun! Regarding the negative comments, I think some allowance has to be made for the difficulty for ANY program to present you with an accurate set of chords from the cocophony of a band mix. Also, it’s a bit naive to expect it to load music you don’t own (duh!), so it won’t work with streamed music (unless you’ve bought it AND dowloaded onto your computer). Your CD collection is fair game though.

Thank you so much for your thorough review of Capo 3. It's so nice when users *get* our app...and the limitations with loading music you don't own! I can't tell you how many 1-star reviews we get from people who except to load DRM-protected files and are disappointed when they don't work. Anyway, thanks again — VERY much appreciated!

Not just for guitarists

This app is very well done indeed. I use it for isolating and transcribing drum parts. The idsolation tools are much better and easier to use than a traditional EQ. The sound quality when slowed down seems to me to be superior to other apps that do the same thing. And the UI is simply beautiful, what macOS apps should look like. The automatic beat detection is surprisingly accurate, I was really quite impressed. Once you manually set the time signature (meter) it works out where the bars (measures) are. You can nudge the downbeat backwards or forwards a beat if it’s been confused by a pickup bar. The only negative is that in the rare cases where the beat detection goes awry (for example due to an odd or mixed meter) there is as yet no way to correct this (whereas you can correct the automatic chord recognition), although when I asked the dvelopers about this they told me that it is something they plan to add. All in all I’m very pleased with my purchase.

Fantastic for transcribing and learning from recorded music

I've used Capo for about 4 years, and it has been an invaluable tool in my path of discovery for learning jazz guitar. There are other apps that allow you to select regions, loop, change the playback speed, or change the pitch, but Capo has a killer feature that I've found to be very helpful: the spectrogram. With it, I can transcribe a 3 minute guitar solo in about a half hour, working out all the notes played. With the spectrogram, it is easy to work out not only all single notes played, but also any double stops, triads, or chords that may be mixed in... you can literally see all the notes, and aurally confirm they are correct. I think it's great!
