Castlevania: SotN 4+

I heard a lot of SotN, and due to games it’s inspired I knew pretty well what to expect.

If you don’t mind retro-gaming and own a pad, it’s a decent title to dive into (I wouldn’t recommend playing it without a pad though). Game holds up shockingly well, with smooth, reactive controls and for the most part decent design. There are some annoyances to deal with - getting stun locked can be annoying, menus can be fiddly to navigate, and for some bizarre reason map is tied to right stick. I also found the game overstayed it’s welcome - going for “true ending” didn’t felt great, and while I enjoyed new bosses, exploring “inverted castle” just wasn’t a pleasant experience IMO.

This is a game that you MUST only play with controller (ie PS or Xbox controller via Bluetooth).

Castlevania SOTN was first released 20 years ago in PS1 that blown everyone’s mind especially when you thought the game finished at 100% map coverage, it was actually the beginning.

Anyone who had not tried this game before, please play it without searching the internet, it will ruin the gameplay. You will enjoy being a half Dracula (Alucard) who is exploring an old huge castle filled with skeletons, zombies and monsters.

The classic music, Alucard’s cool actions and the creativity of the game system are the reason I play it again and again in PS1 and computers. I can’t believe it is now on IOS.

In term of difficulty, there are some challenges but not hardcore. If you compare to souls game, this is a piece of cake.

I have no problem playing it with a PS4 controller. Everything has been swift. The only issue would be looking for map which took me awhile to figure it out - to open map with PS4 controller you need to hit ‘up’ using R3. Hope it helps.

This was a favourite game of mine in days gone past, and thought I’d relive those days with more time on my hands (Thanks Corona).
The ‘port seems great on my iPhone XS with smooth graphics and faithful recreation of the original game, but with a few issues that have knocked the stars down a few:
Playing on the touchscreen is sometimes nigh on impossible! Missed button presses (often at crucial times) and poor reaction times, combined with the inability to resize and reposition the buttons have made this game unable- ONLY GET THIS GAME IF YOU INTEND TO CONNECT IT WITH A BLUETOOTH CONTROLLER.
Also the resolution of the cutscenes are woeful.
Konami missed the trick on this one, and I do feel a refund is due as it should be clear that a game pad is a requirement to play.
