Description

“God’s first word is silence.”
-Thomas Keating

Centering Prayer is a method of silent prayer that prepares us to receive the gift of contemplative prayer, prayer in which we experience God's presence within us, closer than breathing, closer than thinking, closer than consciousness itself. This method of prayer is both a relationship with God and a discipline to foster that relationship. Centering Prayer is not meant to replace other kinds of prayer; rather it casts a new light and depth of meaning on them. Centering Prayer is an ancient method of Christian prayer adapted for modern times by Fathers Thomas Keating, William Meninger and Basil Pennington.

The Centering Prayer application will support your daily prayer practice commitment. Beautiful and peaceful, the app includes an adjustable timer, as well as opening and closing prayer options that you may read before and after your silent prayer time. An assortment of sounds and backgrounds allow you to choose the type of environment you want to create for your prayer time. Brief instructions for learning Centering Prayer are also included.

It is recommended you practice being in relationship with God through Centering Prayer twice a day for 20 minutes to begin with.

Love this App!

I love this app, I discovered it before I knew anything about Centering Prayer and it led me to find out more. It is really easy to use and so versatile that you can adapt it to suit you. The opening and closing prayers done either side of the time of silent contemplation and ‘consenting to God’s presence and action within’ are full of wisdom, grace and a deep appreciation for the character and mystery of God. This has become a regular part of my devotional time, and I sense that I take the peace and a deeper connection to God with me into my day as a result. One thing I would say, is that you should start with just a few minutes and once it becomes part of your practice you can build up from there. If you start with trying to do 20-30mins or more, twice a day, that is quite a task in a busy life! I believe that God can work in any amount of time, let God guide you in how and when to extend your prayer time if needed. Better to be faithful with a more manageable time in order to create a regular practice of connection and contemplation. Hope this app blesses you as it has done me. BIG thanks to Contemplative Outreach.

We love this wonderful app, and would recommend it to anyone wanting to deepen their inner life . We use it every day in our practice of sitting in silence with God , and find it enhances our commitment to this deeper prayer of the heart. The lovely words of encouragement , the quiet timings , and the chime of the singing bowl or beautiful sound of birdsong in rainfall ,draw us in to deeper resonance of prayer, and out again infusing our daily life . Thank you so much for this gift of enabling deeper heartfelt communing to help us ‘ live a life that’s greater than our own’.

Delightful End-User Experience!

So glad to have found this app! I am spoilt for choice for prayers to meditate on before and after my period of silence (the Keating section is a treat - thank you!) as well as sounds to mark the start and end.

The backgrounds, representing the seasons, are beautiful in their simplicity and don’t impede one’s view of the text.

If you are new to Centering Prayer, there is a ‘Vestibule’ you can ‘enter’ in which you will find directions.

Once you have set your timer, sounds and meditations (it’s fab that we can choose different ones to begin and end!) press ‘Begin’ to proceed smoothly through your contemplative session.

Just make sure you leave plenty of time! It’s worth getting up extra early for! I promise, you won’t want to rush this!
