Chambers Dictionary 4+

As a dictionary it’s really good; pattern matching (eg ?ST?TCH?N?I?E = A STITCH IN TIME) also good.

Anagrams: it only shows you anagrams which match words in its word list exactly. So, searching for BRITNEY SPEARS and choosing ‘anagram’ gives ‘Presbyterians’; searching for BRITNEY SPEAR and choosing ‘Anagram’ says ‘no words found’. Not great for when you’re trying to use this to generate anagrams yourself.

This is Chambers - it could be so good, but its not. I bought the dictionarry and thesaurus. The Mac thesaurus usually offers more suggestions and each of those suggestions links to a dictionary definition. Not so with Chambers, which is frustrating. Most words that begin with the prefix 'un-‘ (like unexpected) take you to the word ‘un’ and then you have to work out the rest - this is just a lazy product. The Mac thesaurus does not do this. The screen looks like a bit of semi-amatuer programming it has a feel of something back in 2005. If dark mode is ticked in Mac settings for the menu bar, it sends the app into dark mode - this cannot be changed within the app. I presume Chambers have simply sold their name and have no interest in the quality of the product.
The dictionary has probelms too - search for a ‘containing word and you get all the words with the first three letters of the word you suggest - ie it does not do what it should. The ‘Help document’ under the help menu is off almost no technical help but is great for finding out about quirky words. There is no easy accessible technical support with FAQs etc. Save your money folks!

Being a Listener crossword solver this is indispensable. Having access to this edition has sped up my solving time considerably. Long gone are my days of thumbing through the hardback edition. This even has an anagram solver too! Sheer bliss!!

All thats needed now is the Chambers Crossword Dictionary which works the same way this app does. (As far as I know its only available in the iBook form {3rd edition}).

However, solvers of such puzzles, Listener, Magpie, Azed et al, will not be disappointed with this purchase, it is extremelly good.
