“Top of the pile of bird song recognition apps” - Bird Watching magazine
The only birdsong app that can safely be used on nature reserves!
Featured by Apple in 'Celebrate Springtime’
ChirpOMatic is an excellent way to identify bird sounds around you. Simply record a bird singing and use Automatic Recognition to identify it. The app can work wherever you are - if you don’t have internet or a mobile connection then the app analyses the sound on the device. And unlike other bird apps, our special Bird-Safe mode means that the app can even be used in nature reserves without the risk of disturbing birds.
The app works rather like Shazam® does for music. When you hear a bird, quickly hold up your phone and start recording. The app analyses the sound, and shows you the top matches. You can compare your recording with the reference samples to check the identification. And if you don't have your phone with you, you can use your Apple Watch to record sounds for identification later.
All your recordings are stored on your phone so you can listen to them again or share them with friends. You can help us improve the app by sending us the sound to use in training our system. The best recordings are posted (with your permission) on the Xeno-canto website, the world-wide resource for bird and bird sound research.
"Excitedly playing with it in my garden - robins, blue & great tit so far :):)"
"My new absolute favourite app - #Chirpomatic (It's basically Shazam for birds!!)"
"It is really easy to use and intuitive, which is essential!"
"I've already learnt the calls of 5 garden birds....such a great app."
PLEASE NOTE! The app is designed to identify real live birds under natural conditions. If you test on recorded sounds, you need to play the sounds at a realistic volume and only test on birds that might be found at your location at this time of year.
========= Our bird song apps =========
We have been making bird song apps since the App Store started in 2008, and now have a range of bird and bird song apps for iOS devices - iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad & Apple Watch.
--------------- Chirp! ---------------
Chirp! is our original and most popular bird song app. It has been in the top selling charts every day since it was launched over seven years ago. It has changed considerably in that time as it has grown in size and features.
Chirp! is specifically designed for the identification and learning of birdsongs. However, it is also great if you just want to relax to the sounds of nature.
----------- ChirpOMatic -----------
ChirpOMatic, described above, is our automatic (‘shazam-style’) bird song recognition app.
Because we specialise in bird apps, we know the problems that can arise. Many nature reserves discourage the use of mobile devices as the playing of bird sounds disturbs the birds. But with ChirpOMatic you can switch bird-safe mode on, and use the app safely anywhere. In bird-safe mode you need to hold the device to your ear as though on the phone, in order to hear the sounds.

---- Bird Guide Pro & Pocket Birds ----
These are our reference bird guides, with photos, sounds, notes etc, plus features for recording sightings. Bird Guide Pro is our top-of-the-range app, while Pocket Birds is the budget version.
Shazam® is the registered trademark of Shazam Entertainment Limited and is not affiliated with iSpiny in any way.
A search bar has been added to the Reference Section.
Ratings and Reviews
Usefull but confused by background sounds
Probably impossible to get this app perfect because it is rare to get a recording without either other bird sounds or background road traffic which cause spurious results. However I have found it a useful guide and it is better when you get home and use online analysis. Also you have evidence a species was present at a certain area on a recorded date. I got it to help identify warblers and although It hasn’t got the result correct in first place very often if you take several records and compare with the sample recordings you get the correct identification. At present I do not trust it without a good sighting to verify. I expect to get more proficient with practice and I’ve only made around 30 recordings so far and expect to be more confident with increased use.
Like it lots- just one or two reservations
I use the app to get to know more about strange birdsong and have had it some time. I like the idea very much, and it's useful to have the A-Z index for other occasions. The pictures too are informative. Two qualifications: it seems to take a long time to load initially. The birds don't always stay around before the search function kicks in, so I miss some birdsong. Also, the index is a bit off - why 'House Sparrow' when 'Sparrow (House)' would be much more user-friendly? And I still find the symbols (top RHS) a little confusing. That said, I would recommend it.
Doesn’t work for me.
Used through an iphone6 and given it several attempts to get it right. Been careful about back ground noise and wind over the mic. During my trials pheasants and buzzards have been easily the loudest birds but were never picked up. Singing blackbirds have also been present and not identified. Only correct example I have found was a robin. Today I was no more than a couple of metres from a pair of little brown jobbies I didn’t recognise. They were both singing away loudly and continuously. App said siskins! I know siskins, we have them on our feeders. Siskins they were NOT! Every recording I have done has identified ‘Collared Dove’. I have yet to hear or see such a dove at the time of recording.
From my experience of this app I can only conclude that it doesn’t work and not worth buying and installing.
Developer Response ,
If you listen back to the recordings that you have made, you will probably find that you are picking up more noise than you thought. An over-emphasis on Collared Dove in the results indicates that there is too much background noise of wind or traffic. Remember that the app is not analysing what you have heard, it is analysing what you have recorded so a noisy recording means poor results.
Up to six family members will be able to use this app with Family Sharing enabled.
