Could answer explanations be included in future?

Just a suggestion, but I feel a lot of the complaints people have regarding the questions could be resolved if there were some detailed explanations for the answers. I think it would be helpful if we could understand what the experts were thinking when they came up with the answers. I find things are very easy to forget or misapply when you don’t understand the logic behind them.

Managers Review

This test for managers is way over the top for what is reqd. The questions and answers can be confusing with multiple answers with a twist to the wording. It seems this test is more concerned with making money from resits than getting people thru a system which for years has been a point of ridicule in the construction industry. Every senior client I have ever worked for employ full time professionals to set up inductions, create and approve RAMS handle and direct safety operations on a daily basis. Most senior construction workers do not need this high level of testing which causes stress and unnecessary concern, causes issues at work with employees studying for over a week during work hours to try and get a pass for a CSCS card.
I have over 50 years in the industry and along with many other colleagues put this down to a money making scheme by the govt.
As we are professionals in our own disciplines this is attempting to make us all professional safety officers. I agree safety is the most vitally important aspect in construction but this is way beyond that.

Developer Response ,

Dear geomet1001,

Thank you for your feedback regarding the Manager and Professionals test and we are sorry to hear that you & your colleagues feel some of the questions are not relevant for your job roles.

The new test has been developed by qualified HS&E experts, to ensure that it is relevant and applicable to today’s modern workforce. We have also worked with CSCS to ensure that the new test is in line with scheme requirements.

The new Managers and Professionals test has been created to be relevant to the construction industry, not just specific job roles. Candidates taking the test will have a high level of responsibility within their roles. They have a duty to protect those they manage and even those they don’t. They must understand the risks of working in a construction environment, lead by example, and have the tools to embed and implement health and safety protocols and procedures.

The diverse audience taking this test ranges from managers and professionals who work in micro-sized businesses, to those that work for large major contractors with a full regime of bespoke training in place. For this reason the test is not role specific and broader in nature.

For more information or support with the test, including how to rebook should you need more time to revise, please visit our website.

Best Wishes

Questions and Answers are terrible

Having read all of the other reviews and hearing from colleagues about this new test I wasn’t looking forward to it but did think there might just be an element of people having sour grapes for having failed the test.
However I’ve just downloaded the app and have only been through about 20 questions, 15 of them being absolutely horrendous.
For example this one:
Q. When conducting work underneath or in close proximity to overhead power lines it should not been done during darkness or poor visibility weather conditions. Is this correct?

1. Yes as the reflection from the vehicles lighting can obscure rather than illuminate the power lines.
2. No, as there are specific safe systems and monitoring procedures in place around the power lines.
3. Yes, as the operators vision will become significantly impaired and could confuse the distance of the power lines.
4. No, as the vehicles are fitted with specialist external lighting that clearly illuminates the power lines.

Now obviously the answer is either either 1 or 3, however only one is correct even though they amount to the same thing. That the power lines will be less visible

If this is the standard for the rest of the questions the people who came up with these questions and the people who sat down and thought they were suitable need to be removed from the industry as they don’t know how a test should work.

Developer Response ,

Dear GJAcko89,

Thanks for your feedback... Following the launch of any new product there is a review period, during which time any necessary updates or revisions are made. Since the launch of the new MAP test, we have listened to candidates, collated their feedback and taken remedial action where appropriate. This review process ensures that all feedback received from candidates around the test and the revision materials is considered, and informs any changes made.
You queried the following question:

o When conducting work underneath or in close proximity to overhead power lines, it should not be done during darkness or poor visibility weather conditions. Is this correct?
A. Yes, as the operator's vision will become significantly impaired and could confuse the distance of the power lines
B. No, as there are specific safe systems and monitoring procedures in place for operating around power lines
C. Yes, as the reflection from the vehicles lighting can obscure rather than illuminate the power lines
D. No, as the vehicles are fitted with specialist external lighting that clearly illuminates the power lines

I can confirm that this question has been investigated by our team and following their review, it has been decided to update it. In the meantime this question will not be presented in the live test.

The test will continue to reflect any changes made to the revision material and the revision App will receive automatic updates, ensuring consistency. An updated book will follow in due course.

Further information about the changes made, revision materials and support available can be found on our Managers and Professionals test webpage (Health, Safety & Environment test for Managers and Professionals (HS&E MAP ) - CITB).
