“Hugely impressive… It’s the first time I’ve seen a language therapy app that really makes use of the potential of the technology” Dr. Anna Caute, Division of Language and Communication Science, City University of London

“Cuespeak has become the ‘go to’ app in our team. The contents and design clearly show the developer understands aphasia therapy and what people with aphasia and their therapists want” Laorag Hunter, SLT, NHS Tayside, Scotland

“This is the best therapy tool I have ever used” Elizabeth McBarnet, SLT, Lismenary Speech and Language Clinic, N. Ireland.

Cuespeak is a professional rehabilitation tool for people with speech, language and cognitive difficulties after stroke or brain injury. Produced in the UK and now used in many NHS hospitals, Cuespeak contains over 9000 images, 2500 videos showing target words being spoken and broken down into syllables and sounds, and more than 20,000 spoken prompts.

Cuespeak is optimised for use with a Speech & Language Therapist, but can also be used independently. The app can be managed remotely from another location, with the clinician or other helper sending session updates via the internet, and the user sending back results.

Cuespeak moves beyond traditional 'picture naming' approaches towards a more dynamic 'question and facilitated answer' format which seeks better to emulate the processing demands of conversation. The 20,000+ spoken prompts include questions, spoken feedback on errors and 'closure cues' designed to elicit spoken production of target words and phrases.

Exercises from any of the eleven therapy modules can be highly customised to individual needs and combined into a complete bespoke therapy programme which will run automatically at the single press of a button. This enables people even with significant cognitive problems to carry out prolonged, intensive, independent practice to supplement their face-to-face therapy programme.

Exercises cover:

Spoken word retrieval and production
Sentence construction and production
Asking questions
Understanding spoken language
Semantic associations
Phonology
Articulation
Spelling
Reading

An advanced settings menu allows SLTs to tailor exercises for very specific linguistic needs. Target words can be selected according to number of phonemes (sounds), number of letters, number of syllables, first and last sounds, grammatical word class and thematic role. Results capture both accuracy and speed of responses and are displayed over time in graph form.

With the exception of the videos, Cuespeak can run fully without internet connection, making it easy to use on the move.

This version of Cuespeak is aimed at UK users, using British English throughout and with cultural references geared towards the UK. However, a filter is provided to remove UK-specific questions if desired.

Cuespeak is currently free to download, while offering subscription-based in-app purchases.

Aphasia therapist ,

Genius!

I wish I had had this technology 20 years ago! It would have saved days and days of preparation, and I would have reached the answers I wanted a lot sooner!
Cuespeak allows me to support people with aphasia in a way that combines functionality alongside the theoretical underpinning of what we know about psycholinguistic processing. I am confident to use it knowing that its creator has an understanding of aphasia that is glaringly absent in other apps I have tried to use.
The configurations of activities to target different areas (semantics, phonology, orthography), change levels of processing required, and vary the prompts, are endless, it is worth taking the time to use the settings available -if I can anyone can.
Amazingly, the app updates with current affairs and topical themes which makes it engaging and relevant. I use it with clients with additional cognitive difficulties too as it provides structure to enable people to demonstrate competence rather than failure. It is intuitive for assessment, therapy, teletherapy, practice, teaching students and encouraging clients to ‘own’ their therapy - love it love it! Susie Hayden Specialist Aphasia SLT

Cuespeak App
Cuespeak has become the “go to” app in our team. The contents and design clearly shows the developer understands aphasia therapy and what people with aphasia and their therapists want.
Crucially, the material is interesting and relevant, and a bonus is the addition of some humour.

The tasks address a wide range of language and speech processing including semantic judgement, phonological access, orthographic access, sentence construction and speech production. There is plenty of “within task support” if extra cues are required and this contributes to the product resembling therapist delivered therapy. The variety of tasks, including activities that other apps do not address, makes it versatile to use with many patients. The quantity of practice items within each task is impressive and means that boredom is avoided, and a large quantity of practice is easily achieved.

The app is easy to use, works smoothly and is visually attractive. Optional video tutorials areprovided for each task and patients working independently might use these.

The app deserves 5 stars. Voluntary subscriptions to this not-for-profit venture will allow the addition of more content giving more people more quality aphasia therapy.

Real life sentences and lots of adaptable functions

Love the more “real life” nature of this app as opposed to the usual naming style apps as well as targeting sentence level which not many do. Also nicely intuitive for people with aphasia to follow especially when they make an error as it clearly states this. The new update has lots more ways of helping the client too which is fab. I recommend the app to lots of my service users with aphasia in the community.
