Description

“Brilliant! The most comprehensive aphasia app I have ever seen!” Kit Clewley, SLT, Keep Communicating, North Wales

“Hugely impressive… It’s the first time I’ve seen a language therapy app that really makes use of the potential of the technology” Dr. Anna Caute, Division of Language and Communication Science, City University of London

“Cuespeak has become the ‘go to’ app in our team. The contents and design clearly show the developer understands aphasia therapy and what people with aphasia and their therapists want” Laorag Hunter, SLT, NHS Tayside, Scotland

Cuespeak is a professional rehabilitation tool for people with speech, language and cognitive difficulties after stroke or brain injury. Produced in the UK and now used in many NHS hospitals, Cuespeak contains over 3000 images, 1700 videos showing target words being spoken and broken down into syllables and sounds, and more than 10,000 spoken prompts.

Cuespeak moves beyond traditional 'picture naming' approaches towards a more dynamic 'question and facilitated answer' format which seeks better to emulate the processing demands of conversation. The 8000+ spoken prompts include questions, spoken feedback on errors and 'closure cues' designed to elicit spoken production of target words and phrases.

Exercises from any of the ten therapy modules can be highly customised to individual needs and combined into a complete bespoke therapy programme which will run automatically at the single press of a button. This enables people even with significant cognitive problems to carry out prolonged, intensive, independent practice to supplement their face-to-face therapy programme.

Exercises cover:

Spoken word retrieval and production
Sentence construction and production
Asking questions
Understanding spoken language
Semantic associations
Phonology
Articulation
Spelling
Reading

An advanced settings menu allows SLTs to tailor exercises for very specific linguistic needs. Target words can be selected according to number of phonemes (sounds), number of letters, number of syllables, first and last sounds, grammatical word class and thematic role. Results capture both accuracy and speed of responses and are displayed over time in graph form.

With the exception of the articulation videos, Cuespeak can run fully without internet connection, making it easy to use on the move.

This version of Cuespeak is aimed at UK users, using British English throughout and with cultural references geared towards the UK. However, a filter is provided to remove UK-specific questions if desired.

“This is the best therapy tool I have ever used. The levels, variety, clear pictures and breakdown of material are perfect. I introduced it to my dysphasic client just now and he was beaming with delight. The app both challenged him and gave him material he could do easily. He was delighted to read, select choices and then repeat grammatically correct sentences for the first time in 2 years.” Elizabeth McBarnet, SLT, Lismenary Speech and Language Clinic, N. Ireland.

Cuespeak App
Cuespeak has become the “go to” app in our team. The contents and design clearly shows the developer understands aphasia therapy and what people with aphasia and their therapists want.
Crucially, the material is interesting and relevant, and a bonus is the addition of some humour.

The tasks address a wide range of language and speech processing including semantic judgement, phonological access, orthographic access, sentence construction and speech production. There is plenty of “within task support” if extra cues are required and this contributes to the product resembling therapist delivered therapy. The variety of tasks, including activities that other apps do not address, makes it versatile to use with many patients. The quantity of practice items within each task is impressive and means that boredom is avoided, and a large quantity of practice is easily achieved.

The app is easy to use, works smoothly and is visually attractive. Optional video tutorials areprovided for each task and patients working independently might use these.

The app deserves 5 stars. Voluntary subscriptions to this not-for-profit venture will allow the addition of more content giving more people more quality aphasia therapy.

Real life sentences and lots of adaptable functions

Love the more “real life” nature of this app as opposed to the usual naming style apps as well as targeting sentence level which not many do. Also nicely intuitive for people with aphasia to follow especially when they make an error as it clearly states this. The new update has lots more ways of helping the client too which is fab. I recommend the app to lots of my service users with aphasia in the community.

Developer Response ,

Thank you so much for the feedback - we're delighted that you're finding Cuespeak useful. More sentence level exercises on the way!

Excellent!

Excellent app. Very user friendly and versatile. It allows the user to tailor exercises to individual needs, and as progress is made. The built in tutorials for the exercises makes it perfect for independent use and it’s clear that aphasia and the challenges that people with aphasia face are well understood.

Developer Response ,

Thanks for the review! More new therapy modules are on the way....
