Deathtrap Dungeon is an interactive video realisation of Ian Livingstone's multi-million selling classic gamebook starring Eddie Marsan as narrator.

Deathtrap Dungeon is an interactive video realisation of Ian Livingstone's multi-million selling classic gamebook starring Eddie Marsan (Fast & Furious presents Hobbes & Shaw, Deadpool 2, Atomic Blonde) as narrator.

Presented in a similar way to the BBC's Jackanory/Bedtime Stories, or Jim Henson's Storyteller series, the game features nearly 5 hours of video and takes the player through the devious labyrinth of Baron Sukumvit, full of tricks, traps and loathsome monsters on a quest to escape the dungeon.

A very faithful and well presented reproduction

This is a perfect interpretation of possibly Ian Livingstone’s best book from the eighties, brilliantly produced in a low key but suitable setting with excellent characterisation and narration by Eddie Marsdan. For people experiencing the story for the first time you’ll find it an interesting challenge (as for me I don’t want to brag, but the solution is tattooed on my skull from a misspent childhood, and I know the importance of SKILL in this particular book, so I completed it first time, which is actually not the point perhaps because the narration of the wrong paths are probably also worth experiencing) and for those who grew up with it, it’s a welcome return to a finely balanced and described game-book in all its fiendish and gory glory. It’s done essentially word for word, apart from a slight deviation near the end which was a welcome surprise...but I survived nonetheless for the final fanfare (just saying). I’m very pleased with this production, and hope to see more in the future, if possible (City of Thieves springs to mind). Just one note - the dwarf’s anagram puzzle should perhaps only be completable by us manually moving around the letters, but it’s only a minor quibble...Ian McCaig’s memorable illustrations are also present and correct, as you’d hope - his rendering of Sukumvit’s minions on the first illustration are spot on. Six stars, would play/read/listen again after a glass of red or two. Kudos!

Excellent interpretation

This is a fantastic interpretation of the original Deathtrap Dungeon. I like the fact that you still feel like you are playing the book which is all part of the magic. Too many developers default to using 3D when making games, thinking that it leads to a great experience. This is not always the case, and this game proves it. I highly recommend playing this game. Then start collecting the original game books :-)

Masterful

The presentation of Deathtrap Dungeon here is masterful. The original material is as great as it ever was, but wow, the delivery is something else. It’s like being invited to your own session of Henson's The Storyteller. The genius is that during play it truly feels like a dialog, rather than something you’re just along for as a ride. The user interface never gets in the way of the beating heart of this experience, the captivating and spontaneously smile inducing central performance. Kudos to all involved.
