For many years, language learners have trusted our PONS dictionaries. With the PONS app on your smartphone or tablet, you can find the right translation quickly and at any time.
The PONS dictionary library works 100% offline.
Select the dictionary library for your app! Find the dictionary to suit your individual situation: If you are going away on holiday and want to just quickly look up a word or two, then the BASIS dictionary is the right choice for you. If you feel safer with a range of medium-sized vocabulary then choose the CONCISE or ADVANCED dictionary. If you write foreign-language texts professionally, then you probably need a more comprehensive dictionary, such as BUSINESS or PREMIUM.
Discover dictionaries in a range of different languages: Brazilian Portuguese, Bulgarian, German as a Foreign Language, English, French, Italian, Dutch, Greek, Polish, Russian, Spanish and Turkish.
Functions of the dictionaries:
• Direct look-up: Simply select a text in Safari, tap the share button and choose a dictionary. All of the words in the text that can be looked-up are then displayed.
• Look-ups from other applications: Copy individual words or whole sentences to the Clipboard, switch back to the dictionary app and individually look up all the words.
• Learn vocabulary: You can define words that you would like to learn as a vocabulary card. This allows vocabulary to be learned quickly and effectively! (Optimized for the ADVANCED English, French, Italian and Spanish dictionaries.)
• Synchronization via iCloud: access favourites, search history and vocabulary cards (in the dictionaries) with any device logged in to your Apple ID.
• Listen to numerous keywords spoken by native speakers and practise your pronunciation. (Available for German, English, French, Spanish, Italian, Russian)
• Use the full-text search to find examples.

Potential for being great - but it is not
Pons has proven to be a source of highly reliable dictionaries. However this app needs improvement. It takes ages to open up - not practical for a 'reference' app.
Moreover, It is impossible to isolate the individual dictionaries that one has acquired as in-app purchases. This is very regrettable, considering the price of each dictionary. (The previously purchased dictionaries get automatically incorporated into the app, without losing the separate App that it first came with. That is good.)
It takes ages to switch from one dictionary to another, (I use 3 of them) and more often than not, one accesses instead the function that encourages the purchase of yet more languages is accessed. Annoying!
I only mention all in the hope that this app will be improved. The dictionaries themselves are, as always with Pons, excellent.
all in one place but inconvenient to use
A great idea to have all dictionaries in one place, but the app is slow. It also constantly has to download the dictionaries again when an updated version becomes available and that needs to be triggered manually. The single versions are available and faster so I tend to use the single dictionaries. It is beyond me why PONS does not offer upgrades e.g. from advanced to premium for a discounted rate for existing customers. You have to pay the full price even if you paid for an advanced already and then it does nothing but exchanging the dictionary. The pricing policy is definitely wrong. These dictionaries are very expensive anyway.
