Driving Academy UK: Car Games 4+

One of the better games

Relative to some of the other App Store driving games, this is a fantastic choice. It provides a realistic, pleasant driving experience with simple controls and an easily-navigated home interface. The “UK” feature makes it much better as the road signs and direction of driving are accurate.

I have a few problems which have taken a star:

- The other traffic, excluding taxis, do not use clear indication which creates an overtaking problem.

- Missing “give way” signs. When there are minor side roads the developers have missed the “give way sign”, resulting in the NPC cars whizzing out of the road and causing a crash.

- Occasionally crashes happen. I will make allowances for small bugs, however the location and positioning of crashes are very obscure. Sometimes this blocks a lane or more of traffic.

- Free ride mode costs an extortionate amount of money to unlock, which disappoints me. When I am not being instructed by an AI assistant, I would like to be able to drive freely.

- Ads. I very rarely complain about adverts, however the amount of them in this game is horrific. After every level, instead of progressing with your newfound motivation, you are made to sit through 30 seconds of mind-numbing lies.

Other than the mentioned problems, I am very happy with this game and as I say, it is one of the better options. It does lag on older devices.

Nearly a 5

I do really enjoy this game but the vehicles are pretty similar so having a range of different designs and styles of cars would be great! Also, to make it more realistic, it would be good to have the sound of the engine whilst driving. Finally, in a different game made by this designer the tunnels are open and connect to the other map. If that was possible in this game too, that would make it 5 star without a doubt.

Not UK!

This game advertises that it’s “UK” driving but it is not.

It’s an American driving simulator with the driving swapped to the left, signs and rules changed somewhat poorly and some British looking scenery.

Some road signs are just incorrect. A UK “give way” sign does not mean “slow down and let others cars pass”. Other signs are written in unfamiliar language, for example “take a u-turn” is not typical British parlance.

UK roads do not have double yellow lines running down the centre of them. This I think is a real glaring oversight for something fundamental!

The graphics are cute and and attempt to be British. Classic British telephone boxes, Union Jack flags, odd looking signs saying “petrol station” mixed with fire hydrants and “high schools”. I do not mark it down for this. It’s a driving simulator so scenery doesn’t really matter. But UK road signs, rules and markings do matter!

Technically the game is pretty good and enjoyable to play but I wouldn’t rely on it to gain any useful insight to the driving rules on UK roads.

This smacks of American developers who have never lived or driven in the UK being given the job of converting the game for British roads armed only with a vague knowledge we drive on the left and Google.

Done properly, the conversion would have involved a qualified British driving instructor.
