Nice sonic mood generator
I love ambient music and field recordings so I was excited to find this app, which lets you create soundscapes automatically (in shuffle mode) or to create them from scratch, in both cases using banks of built-in sounds.
Drone FX is pretty straightforward in operation - it takes about half an hour of reading the manual and applying what you've learned to the interface, tops. You can get some pretty good mood pieces right off the bat, although they all tend to be a bit dark/gloomy - ambient music can be uplifting too, but I guess this is called Drone FX for a reason!
Two minor points for future development: I'd love to see a button to reset all the "instrument countdown to next play" button to defaults, because as it stands if you stop and restart a song from the top, the app retains the "time until next play" setting from wherever in the song you were when you stopped playing it, and starts from that point when you start the song from bar one again. The only way around this is to close and reopen the entire app, which seems a bit drastic. The other thing would be to allow the import of user-defined sounds, or some kind of AU/MIDI connectivity to allow this app to drive other connected music apps. This would massively open up Drone FX into whole new worlds of explorative possibilities and would make it a five star app, but maybe the idea of the developer is to create boundaries to the type of songs you can create, which is fair enough.
Anyway, this is absolutely worth your while if you like creating doom-laden atmospheric soundscapes!
(PS there's a punctuation error in the AppStore for Drone FX right now: it should be "Generative music in all its glory", not "all it's glory"!)
Downloaded, press play, nothing happens.
Reset to factory defaults, press play, nothing!
If you love ambient music this is just about the best thing ever. You can tinker with it endlessly whatever your level of musical ability. Even better, you can put it on auto-pilot, whack on the headphones and drift away while it does all the creative work itself. The quality of the audio is superb and outshines many ambient cd's I've paid good money for. On auto, the settings change every couple of minutes - I'd like to see a user-setting for this value. You can always save the current settings, but I'd also like to see a button to add sequence to a favourites list and an option to playback the favourites list, but these are far from deal-breakers. This is already one of my all-time favourite apps and yet another reason why the iPad is the future of computing.
