NOTE:
Don't over-tighten drum heads!
Pitches of a drum head tuned beyond the tuning range limit may cause erratic/'jumpy' readings displayed as random frequencies below 450 Hz.
So, in case your snare's resonant head is tuned beyond 450 Hz, the app may show an erratic pitch below 450 Hz.

Crashes

I really can’t give a good review. Worked great at first but then started crashing on opening up. Tried to reinstall 5 times but still crashes. Tried the link to support but even that crashes. Waste of money.

After some frustration and determination not to waste my money, I finally discovered the issue. My Bluetooth hearing aids that connect to my phone where the app is causing the crash. Not entirely sure how but if I turn them off, the app doesn’t crash but as soon as I switch them back on, crash. Apologies for the original poor review but I hope this may help others with the same issue.

As for the app, it takes some figuring out but once you do, it works a dream. I have some issues with incorrect readings but I’m sure that this is due to the position I’m holding the phone. A phone clamp for the drum ring would be a great accessory so sort this issue…..

For anyone that struggles with how to use it, I would suggest watch the videos.

Developer Response ,

Hi, could you please email us at support@drumtunepro.com?
We’re happy to help!

Apologies for the crashes.

If the app worked great at first, but then started crashing later on, it means there must be an external cause.

Let’s take a look together, and figure it out! Thanks.

EDIT: Thanks for updating your review, having contacted support and for letting us know that your hearing aids induce a crash if they are turned-on at the start-up of the app.
Your feedback is much appreciated and warmly welcomed.
It's great that you figured out which external device causes this start-up crash and at the same time were so kind to inform us & others about it so that your findings positively contribute to a future-solution, and offer a work-around meanwhile.

(Often, especially if a crash's source is external from the app & device-related, it's not easy to figure out its root cause, when we don't have the exact same external device and exact same phone model at hand.)

Your attentful help and info provides us with an opportunity to check if we can find a solution to make the app compatible with your hearing aids.
We'll release a beta-version for you to test with your device, for verification, once we're ready to shoot for it.
At least we can attempt to prevent the crash from happening, in case we aren't able to ensure compatibility with your hearing aids.

We're glad to hear that (besides this rather exotic crash when your hearing aids are turned on at startup of the app) you find the app a useful tuning tool that serves you well, once past the learning curve.

Meanwhile, we'll see what we can do & will keep you posted via email! Cheers.

Is it me or the app?

I am really struggling with this app. I’m fairly new to tuning my drums (an old Pearl Export kit) and wanted a tuner to help me with accurate intervals as well as tuning the batter and reso heads.
I have found it really good for tuning the snare and smaller toms, but by the time I get to the floor and kick the tunings are so low that the lug nuts are loose and the heads have wrinkles.
Another slightly frustrating problem is that sometimes when tuning the lugs a reading will jump from, say, 90hz to 145hz with just a tiny adjustment when all the other lugs are still around 90hz.
I have tried various preset tunings, but without much improvement.
It could be my lack of experience with tuning, but that is why I bought the app.

Developer Response ,

Hi,

It’s you. But, like you say, if you’re fairly new to tuning drums, some struggle is to be expected. Please, don’t worry.

Grant yourself the room to make “mistakes” while exploring different tuning styles for your drums.

If you struggle exploring, we’ll be glad to help with tips if you drop us a line.

Achieving a good sound & feel isn’t about clearing drumheads alone. It’s a matter of making tuning choices regarding at what ranges to clear the drumheads that are suitable for your instrument and musical needs.

It seems that facet may need some additional practice and exploring.

For example: you say the drumheads are too loose at certain lug pitches?
If so, tune higher.
The drumheads are too slack when the rods are loose.
Your drumheads need to be sufficiently tensioned to be playable.

Don’t try to tune to notes below your instrument’s tuning range. The lowest fundamental tone you can squeeze out your drum is at the point whereat both heads are nearly slacked out… there’s nothing in reach anymore below.
Having both heads so little tensioned would not get your sound projecting well… so for playability (sound & feel) you may want to tune up a bit, and play with the interval between both heads.

If a suggested tuning in a predefined kit isn’t suitable for your combination of instrument and drumheads, it’s not the right predefined kit for you.

The tensioning ranges of the drumheads determine how low you can tune a drum.

Get acquainted with the tensioning comfort ramges of your drumheads first…

Once you know these, it’s easy to respect the temsioning comfort range of your drumheads while making tuning choices for your drums.

It sounds as if some of the lower drums are outside of these tension ranges.

Once a drumhead is too slack, like you described, you’re not anymore in the tensioning comfort range of that head.

The issue is not the app, it is that you need to get acquainted with the tuning range of your particular instrument, diameters, drumhead combinations…

It seems you tried tuning to pitches that aren’t within the tensioning ranges of the drumheads.

If you decide on the intervals between the fundamental tones of all drums in a kit, ensure to start from the lowest tuned drum and then work upwards.

(Eg Don’t tune a 22” kick below 38Hz and don’t force a floor tom to get a fundamental tone of 50Hz with one head slack and the other tight. That doesn’t work.

Of course, as a beginner you won’t know until you tried.)

Discovering those things are part of the drum tuning journey.
Mastering tuning and your sound & feel takes practice and a lot of time needed for experimenting.

Not all predefined tuning presets are equally suitable for all instruments, drumhead types, etc.

There’s some experimenting and exploring to do at first.

That’s normal and the app will certainly assist you in gaining insight on drum tuning.

Explore, and if you like, ask us… we’ll think along.

In general, based on your feedback, it sounds you’re trying to tune the floortom or kick to a too low fundamental tone, or at least to a low fundamental tone with the heads too far apart in pitch for that fundamental tone, so that the lowest lug pitch simply is below of what’s feasible within the tensioning range of the lowest tuner drumhead.

Too slack is too slack. Remain above too slack.

You make the tuning decisions in function of the instrument and desired sound & feel.

Explore tuning approaches to learn what fits your instrument and needs.

If you want to tune to a fundamental tone near the ultimate low end of a floortom or of a kick, then this implies the interval between the lug pitches of both heads can only be close to unison, the lowest possible tone a drum can produce is when both heads are tuned to lug pitches that are situated just above a too slack head tension.

That is not necessarily the most impressive sound… even while being low.

It may well be that, if you want a more beefy thunderous floor tom sound, tune the batter head to a lug pitch where it’s rather slack, and the reso head much higher, whereby it’s gonna be rather tight for such a low note. That’ll allow you to dig your sticks into the batter head and get a roaring, thunderous reso response dynamic.

If you reach out, we’ll be happy to listen and look at your needs!

Thanks! Happy drumming!
