A Learning Resource, but must be one of many

Duolingo’s gameification of learning a language makes it fun and easy to keep coming back. Drawing on similar techniques that addictive phone app games do to reward your neurotransmitters with dopamine, you’ll be more motivated to learn than by conventional methods. There are drawbacks, the system is not as robust as other learning methods but I would caution users that this should only be one weapon in your arsenal of language learning. Sometimes you may be struck by some of the bizarreness of sentences you are being taught but pay attention, there is more than. Words to a language - my expectation is these are examples from uncommon syntax or sentence structure being demonstrated, though this is never confirmed explicitly. Finally, Duolingo alone will help you towards some sort of proficiency, but if you are not cross-stitching your learning along your neuropathways by engaging with other learning methods, you may find it difficult to recall your Duolingo learning except when your mind is in Duolingo mode : basically your memory needs Duolingo to prompt it and recall. Books, audio learning, talking, these need to make up part of your learning too if your dream is proficiency. All in all Duolingo is pretty good though and will be of use to those prone to “binge learning” (of any skill) followed by periods of no learning to build routine, habit, and consistency more sitting down with text books on your own.

This is a good app to keep you going, as you can learn in small chunks when you get a moment. It has real speakers for the listening which is brilliant. It applies gaming techniques to language learning. Sometimes this is good, like seeing your progress, and different activities. Plus a bit of competition which can be motivational (you are in a ‘league’ and can see where you are in the table). You get double XP for 15 minutes often, which encourages you to do frequent chunks, which is good for learning. Some bits don’t quite work though. There is a ‘ramp up challenge’ which has good stuff for learning. But, as you get nothing if you don’t complete a section, if you are going for the points against the clock - which often you are - it steers you towards very repetitive, easy but higher value tasks. That particular challenge is also annoying because the actual challenge work, which is against the clock, is not even/increasingly hard (although the time is shorter). Some of them have a lot more typing in than others, and one mistake means you have to repeat what can be a long sentence. It’s frustrating. Minor gripe over payment that it advertised at £x a month, but then took the whole year off at once. It was probably in the small print but was not expecting that. I thought I would give it a go for a month and didn’t realise it would do that. As it turns out I will carry on for the year probably anyway. Overall good, though.
The Best Way To Learn A Language!

I am still in school, and enjoy every lesson that comes towards me. But, French always seems the toughest. It’s always a bummer when I hardly can keep up with it when I have a habit of getting distracted easily. One distraction and, you lose all your progress and don’t know anything. So, I came to download Duolingo. And honestly, it’s one of the best decisions of my life. I’m learning and keeping lots of French knowledge as I go! At the present moment I’m at a 56 day streak, and plan on growing it higher, as your given rewards for streak achievements (like getting a streak for a full 30 days/a month.)! Another reason I downloaded this is because I’m making a trip to Paris in a week’s time now. So, with the extra knowledge in the back of my mind, il be able to provide my family the ability for me to speak and order things for them. And yes, there is the occasional ad after every lesson but, even those are fun! The characters are amazing and, I’m still not tired of the ads! I hope this review comes in handy for any new downloaders, and while I haven’t gotten Super Duolingo or Duolingo Max, the perks seem good and are worth checking out! Thank you to all the Duolingo Staff for making this amazing app, and helping millions around the world improve their language learning journeys. (P.S. : It isn’t just French you can learn, you can learn, to my knowledge, pretty much every language!)
