With its friendly approach and awesome updates, Duolingo’s long been one of our favorite apps for learning another language. Its secret: making the process genuinely fun. Engaging mini-games test your reading, writing, and speaking skills, and joining a club (where you can encourage and compete with others) adds a great social element. Bonus: all those languages and games are available for free!

On the whole a great free app that provides a valuable service!

I’ve been using Duolingo for about 4 years now so I’ve seen it undergo a lot of changes over the years. On the whole I think it’s a great app that is providing a valuable service for free. It’s great for dipping your toes in the water of a new language and making yourself familiar with a lot of vocabulary and grammatical structure. In order to gain higher levels of fluency, though, you do need to branch out into other forms of learning such as watching films in said language, etc.
I would make one complaint about the app. Although most of the changes over the years have been for the better, the process of the developers rolling out the changes can be pretty tedious. One day you will be able to double your gems by watching an ad, the next day you’re not given the choice to watch any ads. I think the experience could be improved by the developers being a bit more measured in how they role out changes. It would be better if as a user I was notified about any changes that were going to take place prior to them taking place, maybe being told that I’m in a test group so the changes may revert after a time and maybe even a reason why the change is being made. It’s nice to be kept in the loop.
Also the league system is great, but I wish you could somehow choose to get put into a group with people that are on your friends list.

Duolingo Plus worth paying for : excellent French course

Having paid for Duolingo Plus for one year I can fully recommend it for intermediate French learners: the content is huge, varied and keeps being added to. I particularly love the conversational stories that have recently appeared as a book symbol at the bottom of my screen. It is absolutely NOT true that you are limited to five lives/mistakes using Plus: this is an option that can easily be turned off or on (press the Plus icon on screen). As an intermediate I have found the ability to skip to each new skills level invaluable and the skills tests have been fun and challenging. Silly spelling mistakes - even in your own native language - are penalised, but of no consequence if you have unlimited lives, so Plus is worth it for that. This way I managed to zoom through the entire course, learned so much new vocabulary, grammar and spelling without ever getting bored by pointless repetitiveness, and would now consider myself almost fluent.
My only quibble is that other courses fall far short of this quality: I had to advise a German relative, studying intermediate English, not to pay for Plus because the content of that course is so much more limited and basic, which is a real shame. I also dislike the mumbling American voices and US vocabulary, so for the German to English course I would only award two stars.
