Ecosia is the tech company that puts the ability to do good into the hands of internet users. When you use Ecosia to browse the web, your searches are helping to plant trees and reverse the effects of climate change.
*** How it works
Like other search engines, Ecosia makes money from search ads. The big difference is, Ecosia uses its profits to plant trees, where nature and people need them most. The Ecosia community is planting millions of trees every month across the world’s most threatened biodiversity hotspots, simply by searching the web. The more people that use Ecosia, the more trees we can plant, it’s that easy! So what are you waiting for?
***Privacy, not just promises
We're interested in trees, not your data: we don’t save your searches, we don’t track the websites you visit, we don’t sell your data to advertisers, and your searches are always SSL-encrypted.
CO2 neutral is not enough. Thanks to our own solar plant powering our servers on 100% renewable energy, and the Ecosia forests around the world, each of your searches removes around 1 kg of CO2 from the atmosphere.
Trust has to be earned. That’s why we publish our monthly financial reports and tree-planting receipts on our website. We also signed a legal contract that requires us to stay true to our not-for-profit cause, forever.
Download the Ecosia app today. The world will be better for it.

*** What others are saying:
“By making Ecosia your search engine you can actually help the environment one search at a time.”
– The Guardian
"A company, whose whole business model is built around planting trees. To fulfill its goal, the company’s customers don’t need to do anything more than leisurely browse the web at their convenience."
“If that's not incredible fundraising progress by a single company, we're not sure what is."
You can now visit the Ecosia shop directly in the app! Check out a great selection of fairly produced merchandise made from certified organic cotton. All profits go directly towards one of our reforestation projects.
We've also fixed a few small things in the app. As usual, send any questions or feedback to our team at email@example.com, we love hearing from you!

Incredible in every way
I’ve used Ecosia for around 2 months now, and I have to say it is fabulous. The general concept of planting trees is amazing and gives you a sense of pride and satisfaction every time you search for something. I love how Ecosia is so clear and honest with its users unlike many other companies and search engines (not giving names). The results are great and I would say close to being just as good as google, however, from time to time, I have to quickly search using google if I can’t find the answer I’m looking for. What I think could be improved is that Ecosia could put the most relevant answer to a search query in a box at the top just as google does. This saves time so that we don’t need to press links and can just get the answer to our searches. Overall, if you’re reading this, Ecosia is really worth putting as your main search engine as: it helps the environment massively, gets more jobs for people, has nearly as good results as Google (and definitely better results than other search engines), shows you what they do with their profits, respects your privacy (which is not the case with many search engines) and is just an outstanding search engine.
I installed and deleted Google's search app several times. It uses storage fast and I don't like the feeling of my every move being tracked and linked to everything else.
Ecosia takes up a lot less space. My every move might still be tracked across platforms, but at least something good comes from it. There's always the question, how do you know you're doing good? Google think they're doing good building the internet of things. But as someone who planted a lot if trees once said, planting trees was good in the past, and we thank those that planted the trees we see around us in our towns and cities. Planting trees still seems like a good idea now, and I bet that the people of the future will thank us for the trees we planted.
Good cause but needs work
I really want to switch to using it as my main browser, but there are too many inconveniences with how the app is laid out.
I like to read things online, but when I close the app it doesn't have the page I am on saved. It will have a page I was on 10-15 pages ago open. This is frustrating when you just want to pick up where you left off: not tap through chapters trying to remember if you read that one.
Another issue related to the one above is that, because it does not open the most recent page, I have finished reading a book, moved on to a new one entirely - only to open the app and see I'm back on the book I already finished. This is particularly annoying because on the website I use there is a "randomise" button to find random books: so I have to re-find whatever book I was on.
There appears to be no history. All of the issues above could be solved if I could at least just go into my history and click the latest link: but I can't. It also seems to rewrite the history on a page, so that if you try to go back to find what you were on before it loaded; it will take you through different pages from your search history.
I want to use this app for everything, but as it stands it just doesn't compete with already existing browsers. It would probably function better as an extension on already-built browsers, or simply needs to step its game up.
