Experience the next generation of sovereign & secure collaboration - it's faster, simpler & more reliable. Still decentralized, still built on Matrix.
Freedom to communicate on your own terms
For individuals and communities - private communication between family, friends, hobby groups, clubs, etc.
Element X gives you fast, secure and private instant messaging and video calls built on Matrix, the open standard for real-time communication. This is a free and open-source app maintained at https://github.com/element-hq/element-x-ios
Stay in touch with friends, family and communities with:
• Real time messaging & video calls
• Public rooms for open group communication
• Private rooms for closed group communication
• Rich messaging features: emoji reactions, replies, polls, pinned messages and more.
• Video calling while browsing messages.
• Interoperability with other Matrix-based apps such as FluffyChat, Cinny and many more.
Privacy-first
Unlike some other messengers from Big Tech companies, we don’t mine your data or monitor your communications.
Own your conversations
Choose where to host your data - from any public server (the largest free server is matrix.org, but there are plenty of others to choose from) to creating your own personal server and hosting it on your own domain. This ability to choose a server is a large part of what differentiates us from other real time communication apps. However you host, you have ownership; it’s your data. You’re not the product. You’re in control.
Communicate in real time, all the time
Use Element everywhere. Stay in touch wherever you are with fully synchronised message history across all your devices, including on the web at https://app.element.io
Element X is our next-generation app
If you’re using the previous-generation Element Classic app, it’s time to try Element X! It’s faster, easier to use, and more powerful than the classic app. It’s better in every way and we’re adding new features all the time.
Element and the team behind it have become largely non-functional over the past several months. It feels like the goal has become to take a very useable piece of technology and systematically reduce the user experience until simple tasks cause considerable hair loss. I can no longer perform the simple task of verifying a device against another.I’ve reported this. No response, no resolution. In just a few weeks you won’t be able to use an unverified device.Time to look for a new messaging platform.
Can’t communicate with own kids :(

It’s a really great and neat messenger app. Privacy oriented, end to end encryption in both DM and group chats, open source and with possibility to selfhost the server. My only gripe is that despite selfhosting a secure Matrix server I can’t use it to safely communicate with our kids because someone classified app as 16+ and even adding it to exception list in iOS parental control doesn’t allow kids to use the apps (at least in UK since age verification requirement on devices) ;(Interesting that (meta)data harvester like Whatsapp is rated 13+, I’d argue that Element X is more or at least equally safe so we really hope they Element team would work on improving age rating :o
Complete lack of QA

In some ways more polished than Element Classic, in other ways it’s even worse. My favourite Element X bug so far is how it will randomly refuse to start and will instead leave you stranded on a white screen until you restart your phone or the app randomly decides you can use it again. Photos that have just been sent in chat not unblurring at all until you swipe out of the room and back in is another instant classic, despite only being introduced in the last few updates.Do the developers even test what they push out? Embarrassing given this is a commercial product
Missing chat search

Some improvements over Element Classic but badly missing a search function. Still need to use both clients concurrently.
As September rolls around we’ve got a fresh release of Element X ready for you to enjoy.
• Voice message users rejoice! Playback will now advance to the next message automatically.
• You can now include a reason for others to see when removing a message.
• Improved the display of messages that contain details within a collapsable block.
Various bugs have been fixed including the possibility of getting stuck on the Join Room screen and the potential of random flickering on specific iPad Mini devices. As always the full release notes can be found at https://github.com/element-hq/element-x-ios/releases
