Description
Do you pronounce the /r/ in 'arm'? Do you call a shelf a 'sheuf'? And what on earth is a 'hoddy-doddy'? There is extensive variation in English dialects: this is why your answers to such questions will allow this app to localize your broader dialect region on a map of England.
Did your home dialect change over time? Our algorithm is based on historical data from the Survey of English Dialects. If it guesses where you are from correctly, your home dialect has probably remained stable over the past decades. If the guess is far off, however, it is probably because of dialect change.
- Can we localize your dialect based on your pronunciation of 26 words?
- Record your dialect and listen to recordings of other users and to historical dialect recordings!
- Choose a pronunciation variant, e.g. 'sheuf', and discover where in England it is used...or choose a place and explore its dialect!

Fun but location selector doesn’t work!
I tried with my 8 year old son and we had great fun on the quiz which put us within about 30 miles of where we were born/grew up. So far so good...but then could neither help by telling it where we are from or could not record our voice as location selector is broken and so the app just gets stuck saying you haven’t selected a location! Could be great but ruined by this.
A suggestion
The app has not gotten my accent right, although I wasn’t much surprised by that. I did the quiz on the basis to see what accent I have adapted most from the people around me. To provide input I wanted to fill in your quiz, but I did not enable my location, thus trying to pinpoint the city I live in rather than the exact address, but I was not able to do that. While the map allowed to chose a place it would not allow me to click next... kind of disappointing that I couldn’t help with the data, due to...? Not wanting to provide personal information? Maybe an area where improvement should be considered.
Nice app
Nice app, and an original idea. Couple of suggestions: the buttons to preview some of the sounds are a bit fiddly and seem to skip you on to the next page instead half the time. Also, for the bit at the end where you fill in your location and distance from work, should this be for where you live nowadays or where you grew up (probably the bigger factor in your accent)?
