Ratings and Reviews
Used to be amazing
Update a year later: Evernote’s massively improved this year, returning to a very useful app. It looks like the albeit huge hiccups after the major update/possible change of ownership have been resolved. It is more expensive than it used to be but definitely getting value from it, love the new features, and grateful I did not give up on them (also meant I found Notion!), and to access my files again.
Old review: There was even a glorious little interim where it was even better, a real star. So useful, two years ago I would’ve said it was a five star gem. More recently however, astonished by how bad this update is, it looks beautiful but if there are glitches precluding you from even accessing it, what is the point, and why don’t you have any accessible support for your disabled users? The help section is extremely difficult to navigate, while the app now has so many glitches it is impossible to use it. Crashes, logs out and forced to repeatedly reset the password relentlessly. Only using browser-based defeats the point. After nine years, 15,000 notes, and a Pro subscription, forced by the lack of support and accessibility, and inability to even access the app, to try and find an alternative. Genuinely gutted and so disappointed.
Idea on phone, play with on tablet, polish on PC
For me, Evernote works like a Remembrall (you know, from Harry Potter - Dumbledore takes memories and drops them into a pan of water so he can look at them later and share them with other people). I can jot down ideas on my phone - voice notes, photos, lists, etc - then play around with the ideas informally on my tablet whether I’m at home or not. Then, when I’m in serious work mode, write them up in a proper format for presentation. There are other cloud services available but, once you’ve got a work one and a special interest one, it can get confusing and it runs out of space. And it then asks you to sign away all rights to your content so AI can learn (please don’t do that, Evernote, because I’ll have to leave). Evernote’s functionality has increased over the last few years so I probably haven’t kept up but being able to organise in notebooks, make notes on the dashboard, search, etc is brilliant. Oh yes, and clipping off websites is brilliant too - instead of trying to manage bookmarks in your browser, just clip the whole thing or save the link. I should make more use of the timer/reminder and look at more detailed functions. Any way (this feels like a letter to my aunt) I love Evernote and it’s revolutionised my efficiency from remembering what I wanted to say at book group to making a quick screenshot of what’s on at the cinema to preparing for a work presentation. Try it.
Update to previous review. New updates are terrible
This used to be the best app on the market but recent updates have ruined it. Has become really buggy now can’t easily export photos or documents from a note without it copying a whole load of hyperlink file path details. Now have to save a photo back to my iPhone image library and export from there so way less efficient for the tasks I use it for. Still no barcode recognition which would be very useful and I’ve asked for it many times. Would also be nice to be able to encrypt an entire note from within the phone or pc app. Still an amazing database but was better before the updates.
—————————————————————————
I’ve used this to collate teaching notes for at least 10 years now. It’s so intuitive and easy to use. I upgraded to a pro account when I started incorporating a lot of HD photos into my notes. The “scanning function” on the phone app is just amazing it will recognised a document or sketch when you hover your phone camera over it and remove all the shadows. Searching notes even recognises words within handwriting and scanned documents. It’s the best app on earth, end of story and I haven’t even scratched the surface of what Evernote can do!
