Files also makes it easy to access iCloud Drive and third-party cloud storage services such as Dropbox, Box and OneDrive.

Features

• Press the Files icon in the Dock or Home screen to quickly open a file from anywhere

• Connect an external drive or SD card to your device to access the files

• Connect to a file server at work or a home PC using SMB from Files.

• Use tags to organise files stored with different cloud providers and across different apps.

• Pin your favourite folders in Browse view for quick access to the ones you use most.

• Give people access to any file stored in iCloud Drive by sharing a link from the Files app.

• Drag and drop to select files and organise them into folders.

All files cancelled. Still a nice idea

My kids, boyfriend and me all went out to the beach and really enjoyed ourselves taking photos. When we got home, we had so many pictures so I decided to make a file purely for beach photos. 2 days later this file was somehow deleted from files. The pictures were still in Photos. I don’t understand and neither does my boyfriend. Owen, (5, my eldest) is coming to a end of p1. So, the p1 mums wanted to make a collage to print out and give it to the teacher as a thank you. I was making it, and created a file for it. 2 days later, guess what happened? The things there had also been transferred to Photos! That is a Major Flaw. Very annoying. My boyfriend has stopped using it. Avril (middle, 4) and Zach, (my youngest, 1) are both not starting anything, but I made files for them as well. Got deleted. Photos had everything I put in files.

Disappointed Developer ,

Lacking in even the most basic functionality

This app doesn’t remember basic things like where you left off from last usage (preferring to default to an inane “Recents” view for which I have no use). It doesn’t remember that I set a particular folder to “List View”, or that I wanted it sorted by kind rather than alphabetically. It provides no way to set such preferences globally, and when previewing PDF files, it refuses to allow you to hide an irritating sidebar which makes the documents unreadable in portrait mode even on an 11’ iPad Pro! These are the sorts of things even one-person developer shops know to take care of, yet the world’s most valuable company can’t spare even a sliver of its billions of Dollars of annual profits to hire people to provide.

That it should be impossible to get rid of such a useless app shows why it’s such a terrible idea for Apple to bundle so much software with its operating systems in such a tight manner. It is bad enough that iPadOS is so crippled while running on even the most powerful hardware, but Apple makes things worse by refusing to get out of the way and allow third-party developers to create full-fledged alternatives to the half-hearted efforts it puts out.

Few issues & usability concerns

Good to be able to access file systems etc, but in some cases although the files app appears as a share to option, it’s not possible to save files from apps directly to a file share & instead you have to share to another app before then being able to complete a save to the intended file share.
Also access to SMB shares appear to be a bit flaky & unreliable, reporting “unknown errors” instead of showing files contained within the relevant share.
