Initially released in Japan in 1987, the original FINAL FANTASY amazed audiences with its rich story and stunning graphics.
Players guide the Warriors of Light as they set out on a quest to restore the crystals to their former luster. Its side-view battles, choice and promotion of character classes, and sprawling world explored with fantastic vehicles quickly became standards of the series. This game set the stage for all FINAL FANTASY games to come.
This release also contains the bonus dungeons added to later editions of the game--the Soul of Chaos and the Labyrinth of Time.

Good, but flawed.
Great to be able to play this classic RPG on mobile. The port is decent for iPhone. Would love to be able to mirror this to a larger display, so I can play on my computer monitor or TV, but doing so mutes all sound - even from connected headphones. Disappointed by that but otherwise it’s worth playing if you want to go back to the series’ roots.
Game is must play for RPG veterans but this port may not be the Choice.
Just to clarify, I don’t think the game is terrible. In fact, I think it’s bloody amazing for the company’s first (at some point, was going to be the only) RPG. As we all know, Square was having financial difficulties due to their games not selling well or due to the fact, the games were not that good. Final fantasy got it’s name because it was going to be Square’s last game but the game was so successful, Square was saved from bankruptcy. This port is a re-realise of the PSP version which in it self, was a re-release of the GBA version which in its self was a re- realise of the PS1 version which was the first re- realise of Final Fantasy on h9me console. This version contains all the extra content from the re-realise which includes two new dungeons, a bestiary and an updated soundtrack. Now I know what you’re thinking. “This sounds awesome, no way it can be bad”. Well, it depends on if you’re playing on a tablet or phone. It is very clear this game was made with phones in mind, leaving tablet users to deal with such things as: Oversized D-pad, zoomed in graphics that don’t look good as they were not made with that perspective in mind. The menu button is constantly disappearing and reappearing at inconvenient times, which means I need to constantly go into battle to manage my equipment. Does that sound fun to you it probably does not. Point being, square is not good at porting to the iPad.
Could have been great
To be clear, the game itself is a joy; utterly engaging and a prime example of what an RPG should basically be. I only take issue with this particular version. The control scheme is a massive flaw. Where ever you put your thumb, that's where the d-pad is. I'm not sure if anyone else suffered this problem but it is truly frustrating trying to walk in a particular direction only to find you are actually going elsewhere. Trying to enter a narrow door way is as challenging as a battle. I feel that adding a fixed, translucent d-pad would help this game a lot. On smaller devices, such as my phone, some of the text over-runs the text boxes. I wish more care was taken when porting this game. You might have difficulty finding this game cheaper but, if you really want to play Final Fantasy without getting frustrated, try it on a different console (Gameboy Advance, PSP, etc). If you don't want to spend that much and are willing to overlook the controls, this is the game for you.
