Description

FlightLink is the free, proprietary app that adds enhanced functionality to all Lightspeed headsets.

FlightLink works seamlessly with Lightspeed headsets manufactured since 2012 (Zulu 2 and 3, Sierra, Tango, and PFX) to record and playback incoming and outgoing communications. Older Zulu 2 and Sierra headsets may qualify for a factory•installed retrofit at a nominal fee. For more information on a retrofit contact Lightspeed Customer Care by phone 800.332.2421 or email at service@lightspeedaviation.com.

When combined with the Zulu PFX ANR headset, FlightLink's enhanced capabilities include recording via Bluetooth and the ability to set a variety of personal audio and operational preferences.

FlightLink Recording Features

FlightLink is perfect for any pilot flying with an iPad or iPhone who wants to capture and retrieve in•flight communication. It is also a valuable tool for flight training at all levels because of its ability to capture the intercom communication of instructional flights.
• Record all activity over the intercom, including inbound and outbound transmissions, and in•cabin conversation.
• Instantly play back ATC calls or other communications from any point within the last two minutes of recording.
• Create a permanent archive of all flight communications for post•flight briefing and training.
• Store your recording library on your iPhone or iPad, and access them with the iOS Files app or iTunes on a Mac or PC.
• Take handwritten notes on iPads and use Apple Pencil or Pencil 2 on supported iPads.

FlightLink Personal Preference Features (With Zulu PFX headsets only)

In addition to its recording features, FlightLink•s enhanced capabilities allow Zulu PFX headset users to adjust a variety of audio and operational settings, creating a personalized flying experience. For example:
• Customize audio settings for different aircraft or users
• Fine tune audio response for maximum voice clarity and music fidelity
• Use the Voice Clarity• option to boost frequencies common in human speech without impacting the quality of music from auxiliary devices
• View remaining battery life with the battery level indicator
• Enable / disable audible low battery alert
• Choose Auto Shutoff• delay intervals
• Save custom settings in up to three personal profiles

The ability to set and save other audio and operational preferences through FlightLink is only available on the Zulu PFX headset.

What’s New

Version 3.0.2

This latest version contains bug fixes and performance improvements to prevent a recording from being permanently lost. Recordings are now automatically stored in iTunes_Filesharing_FlightLink as a back-up file using the Apple “.caf” extension including your deleted files.

In addition, we have added a reminder for Zulu headset users that a 3.5mm auxiliary cable is required for full Duplex information.

Beware do not update to latest version!

Latest update doesn’t work. Any recordings disappear when trying to convert or share them. Also my recordings don’t appear when connecting phone to iTunes on Mac under file sharing if you were wanting to transfer them onto Mac. None of this was a problem prior to the latest update. Has made the app inoperable!

Not been able to get it to work

All my recordings end up at only 4kb in size. Recordings won't compress or play in the library.

Update: Flightlink seems to be denied for microphone privacy settings by default and the app does not prompt the user that this is a requirement in order for recording functionality to operate. Found problem with the help of Lightspeed support. Will be able to test more thoroughly next week.

Update September 2014

Following many weeks of testing I have finally managed to get this app to work, it is certainly not fool proof and depends which order you plug everything in. I've found deviating from this process even slightly makes the iPhone record external engine sounds despite the source being selected as iPhone headphones.

Plug dual GA plugs into the aircraft panel, power up radios, plug cable from lightspeed control to iPhone, turn on ANR, power up Flightlink app, check headphone source is selected. Hit record.

Plugging everything in before powering the radios up has caused bad results for me. I've wasted maybe valuable training sessions working this out so hopefully it helps sometime or the app developers are able to make this more user-friendly with regard to connectivity.

Very helpful for learning

Being able to replay comms after a lesson is an invaluable way of reviewing mistakes and instructions, it really speeds up the learning process. Very useful and makes the Zulu worth every penny.

My main request is that there needs to be a way to speed up playback by removing silent gaps. Ideally a setting that auto skips any silence of more than a few seconds.

Also when playing back, please prevent the device from shutting the screen off as it stops the playback.

Then it would definitely get 5 stars.
