Description

The Flow depression treatment is a free personal guide to help you understand, treat & prevent depression and improve your mental health.

Flow represents a new chapter in the understanding and treatment of depression, based on the latest psychology and neuroscience research.

The app can be used on its own and offers a therapy programme with over 50 therapy sessions. The sessions cover a range of topics from behavioural therapy and lifestyle habits, such as, meditation, sleep, diet and exercise. To track changes over time, the app includes the MADRS-s depression test.

Together with the Flow brain stimulation headset, the app offers a holistic approach to treating depression. The type of stimulation used in the Flow headset, transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), has long been used in clinical settings to treat depression. With Flow, you can now access tDCS in a remote device from your own home. To use the headset you will need the app.

The Flow treatment is based on decades of clinical research and is supported by more than 20 randomised double-blind studies. The Flow headset is approved as a medical device (CE) in the EU and UK for the treatment of depression. Order it at: https://flowneuroscience.com

The programme contains over 50 sessions split into 7 courses, covering topics such as:

- Exercise

Physical exercise has been shown to have a similar effect to antidepressant medication when it comes to reducing and preventing depressive symptoms. Flow will tell you what type of exercise is beneficial and the optimal “dose”.

- Meditation

Meditation is practised by many people around the world as mental “exercise” for the brain. Flow will give you concrete exercises to follow but also show you the neurological basis of why meditation is good for managing stress in your everyday life.

- Sleep

Did you know that sleeping for only six hours each night for two nights in a row is equivalent to being continuously awake for 24 hours? Flow will educate you on sleep hygiene, why we sleep and why sleeping is one of four important pillars for overcoming depression.

- Nutrition

The nutrition sessions will advise and encourage you to eat in a way that science has proven reduces inflammation in the brain, thereby alleviating depression. Spoiler alert: sugar is one of the big villains.

5 sessions in

I am now on my 5th session of Flow. I decided to try Flow as I was already on antidepressant medications and due to family issues was also suffering from an amount of stress. Together they we’re getting on top of me. I have followed the app during my period of stimulation, and have also followed the dietary advice and so far made small changes in my behaviour and doing different things as advised. I realised that my lack of interest in food was probably exacerbating my feelings of lack of self worth . As of today I am feeling brighter, getting up earlier in a morning, eating proper food and the world doesn’t seem as dark. I look forward to seeing what I feel like after the next set of 5 treatments.

Great app

This app really is a pleasure to use, not only is it helpful without feeling patronizing, it’s also beautifully designed. The information is clearly explained and split into manageable bite size courses so that you don’t feel overwhelmed. I’m using it alongside the headset device, and really my only complaint is that if I finish a stimulation session after midnight, then it won’t let me complete a session the next day. Today for example I finished my stimulation session at 00:03 before I went to bed, but it now won’t let me do a stimulation the next day which is throwing the whole schedule off. Due to work schedules not everyone runs on the usual 24 hour clock, and it would be useful if there was a setting to alter that cut off time, so then if someone’s day ends at 4am then it won’t consider it the next day until after then.

Like the evidence based

I've been downloading and trying a ton of these apps for depression, and most are moderately useless. A particular peeve of mine is that most don't tell you why you should do something, are hyper focused on either mood tracking or meditation, and have noisy videos that make it embarrassing to use them anywhere public. This one has a good user interface, seems to have some science behind it and critically - it is silent by default. Best so far and free is a good price point.
