Description

Fret Tester is a fretboard trainer that will teach you to read music on the guitar, mandolin, or bass. From learning the names of the notes on the fretboard to reading standard music notation, Fret Tester covers it all. It was written by educator William Wilson, author of the book “Guitar Games: Learn Guitar. Read Music. Fight Space Monsters,” and is based on years of music teaching experience.

-Clear and straight forward. Buttons are easy to push with no clutter.
-Four modes of play: Name Note, Find Note, Notation, Notes on Staff
-Four instruments: Guitar, Bass, Mandolin, Five-String Bass
-Instrument and game statistics to chart your progress.
-Fretboard charts for all instruments.
-Custom tunings and left-hand mode.
-HD Graphics.

Modes of Play:

Name Note: A dot is shown on the neck and you name it by letter name (A, B, C#, etc.)

Find Note: A note name is shown and you pick from four locations on the neck.

Notation: A note is shown in standard notation and you must tap the onscreen fretboard in the correct location.

Notes on Staff: A treble or bass clef is shown and you must name the corresponding letter. A great first step in learning to read music.

Whether you have never read music on the guitar or are trying to improve your reading in the upper positions, Fret Tester will provide you with all you need to master the fretboard.

Excellent App - Needs Updating - for 2020 iPads

Great way to learn all the notes on the fretboard.
I have used this for several years on and off. However, it doesn’t work with the latest iPad Pro 11 inch model. OK with the 2017 iPad Pro 10.5 inch but not the newest model - an update is needed, until that is done I can’t use it which is a shame.

Learn notes in 3 days

I've only used the 2 note trainer games. It has been a task I've been afraid to take on. Instead of learning string by string, I learnt all 6 strings 3 frets at a time. Before long you instinctively press the correct notes. I can now write all the whole notes up to the 12th fret on a fretboard diagram in 30 seconds. I can't believe how easy it has ended up being. It's so addictive.
It's cool that you can control what strings or what frets you want to learn. I learnt the notes over 3 days (approx 6 hours).

Excellent app

This is a very good app, simple, well designed and well thought out. If you play guitar, bass or mandolin and want to improve your music reading skills this app will help. The four games are very good, and I image that playing each one for a short amount of time every day will help one improve. The graphics look a little soft on the retina display iPad, but don't let that put you off, as it's only a minor thing. This is a good app with well thought out pedagogically focussed games.
