Fugue Machine is a tool inspired by composition techniques used in Baroque music and Serialism — e.g. Bach’s canons and fugues, and Schoenberg’s twelve-tone technique. The idea was to design a tool to manipulate a melody’s speed, direction, and pitch, as well as play multiple variations of the melody simultaneously.
As it turned out, the best implementation for this was to reimagine one of the most fundamental building blocks of all music sequencers: the piano roll.
Fugue Machine is the world’s first multi-playhead piano roll. Create a music sequence and play it back with up to four playheads at once — each at various speeds, directions, pitches, and more. Watch the playheads dance, and hear the complex patterns that emerge.
It’s mesmerizing.
Fugue Machine supports iPhone, iPad, MIDI, AUv3 MIDI, Ableton Link, Audiobus, Audiobus 3 MIDI, and Inter-App Audio. Thanks to the AUv3 standard, you can run multiple instances of Fugue Machine on the same device when hosted in an AUv3 MIDI host app — like Logic Pro, AUM, and Audiobus.

Oh boy! So much to admire here. This is a beautifully designed music generator, made with love, and designed to help you create amazing, contrapuntal, mixed-up melodic harmonies that fly in spirals around your mind. It's that good!
Dive straight in with the pre-loaded songs to see how things work, then let your creativity flow through the simple, intuitive interface. This app has clearly been made by someone who loves the sheer possibility of combinatorial sounds and has delivered to us the ability to create new soundscapes - the focus here is on ambient and rhythmic exploration, and it is a wonderful thing to behold.
The latest update, which allows you to map MIDI out to any compatible app, and brings in Audio Unit functionality, is almost making me go into a frenzy of joy, such are the profound delights that it opens up.
Buy this app. You won't regret it!

Superb App.
One of those app where you can get lost in the music for hours.
Super easy to get great sounding results. Enter a few notes into the piano roll and then tweak the settings of the 4 different play heads so that they play at differing tempos, pitches and direction.
Soon you’ll be sitting up proud like a modern day Bach with a brand new composition.
Its a very cool app. I like to add in notes of a song I have already written and then hear how the app can spin a different outlook on that melody or riff which can then be useful to use elsewhere in the track.
All 4 play heads can be assigned to separate midi channels so you can play other iOS Synths with the app.
