Great (but just a couple of small bugs)
First, what a fantastic game/app! Just as much fun as the Fighting Fantasy books - not better, but different. This has been written especially for the iPhone format and benefits from this.
The combat sytem can be lengthy (and complicated given that it's just rolling a handful of d6s...) and at times a little dull with no one scoring a hit - but that's a minor quibble. My main gripe would be when you start using more and more dice and they disappear from view on the screen. Can this bug be fixed so that we can always see the dice rolls? Whilst talking about bugs I've had the app crash a few times - it's always been saved to the current page, but just a bit annoying.
This is a huge game with a lot of replayability, and the inclusion of achievements is a nice touch. I will certainly be playing this for a long time trying to unlock everything. And look forward to playing more. It won't replace my Fighting Fantasy apps, but will definitely sit alongside them.
Update. Would love all these to be updated for iPhone XR so they fit the screen.
I love the gamebook series. A fantastic collection of choose your own adventure style books.
Very well done the dice rolling for battles is a nice touch. Well worth the money if you like this kind of thing.
Worth every penny!
I'm a newbie to the gamebook world, my only experience being reading a few 'choose your own adventure' books as a child. I played on novice mode, and still found it a challenge! It took me 2 separate playthroughs, using a ton of bookmarks, to succeed, and boy did it feel satisfying. I imagine this game would suit most skill levels, as there are various options to choose from. The gameplay is great. I loved that the dice are built into the game, making it easy to play on the move, and battles are so much fun! They're the perfect mix of skill and luck and had me biting my nails. The story was exciting. At times it was a cliche fantasy tale but I enjoyed it nonetheless. I highly recommend this to fantasy, rpg and interactive fiction fans. I will definitely be picking up the rest of the series!
