Description

GeogIT, the Geography fieldwork app is here!! Designed specifically for Geography students to modernise data collection and presentation.

GEOGIT has been designed to modernise fieldwork and reduce paper consumption by enabling electronic data collection of 35 different methods ranging across both physical and human geography investigations. GEOGIT uses your phones ability to log your coordinates saving not only your data but the exact location in which it was recorded.

Behind the scenes with every bit of information you log an Excel spreadsheet is being built. Upon completion of your fieldwork your data is sent to you immediately as separate Excel files. No more will data be lost as a result of a torrential downpour, a freak gust of wind or leaving the booklet on the bus … and don’t worry, if your battery dies or you close the app all of your data is automatically saved to the archives. Where you can load it up again and pick up from where you left off.

That’s not even the best of it… the files which you receive are automatically saved in a csv format enabling you to simply drag the files directly into ArcGIS and watch as your results are displayed geospatially within seconds!

GEOGIT aims to replace the outdated dependence on clipboards and paper booklets and instead allows you to electronically collect your information for 35 different methods of data collection.

Great app - no editing features???

The app it’s self is great. All the fieldwork practices are accessible and data collection is simple. However, once saved you can’t edit the data. Additionally, the app doesn’t let you add further data collection methods to your fieldwork folder, after you have initially selected the methods. This means that I had to create more folders and when a mistake was made, I had to start again!

I also had issues sending the final data to my email. The send button was not actively responding and I received no data......

This app needs work. Has the potential to be of value to school geography trips in the future. Can’t recommend it just yet, unfortunately . But great concept!

Every Geography teacher/student needs this

Such a well thought out and useful app for fieldwork. Makes everything so easy with clear instructions and reasoning for fieldwork techniques along with automatic logging of the latitude and longitude. When you finish an email is sent to you with your data and simple guidance on how to implement into GIS using free ArcGIS software.
I particularly like some of the more creative methods of data collection that the author has created, many of which utilise smartphone technology. E.g decibel meter.
I have a few bits of constructive feedback to help refine and improve, for example using the measure or AR function of the phones for a pebble analysis would be a great addition. Also, I was unable to save longshore drift data, maybe a teething problem.
Overall, a great tool which will enthuse students to conduct independent fieldwork. Author deserves a medal! Well done!

Great app

Can’t recommend this app enough, it is especially useful for those doing their a level geography coursework as it is a quick and easy way of inputting data. In addition to the wide range of methods featured in the app, it also provides a few tips for presenting the data after having collected it. When the fieldwork is complete, the app allows you to email the results to yourself, presenting them in a few basic, easy to interpret tables etc, ready for analysis. My only criticism of the app is that you can’t go back and change some of the data after entering it; for example with the crime prevention mapping and mood mapping. To improve the app, features such as the ability to edit data after inputting it would be very useful. Other than that, great app, and an excellent alternative to the traditional clipboard and pencil method!
