Much nicer than Apple News app

I don’t use the Apple News app anymore because the Google News app is so much better. The layout is much cleaner and easier to navigate and read. Animations are lovely and smooth. It feels like there are way more sources in Google News and the reading experience on iPad is much more comfortable. It’s a very smooth app. Also, it surfaces the right news at the right time and I find it easier to train than the Apple News, because every article has a “more of this” or “less of this” toggle so you can easily tell it what you like. I still use RSS for a concentrated view of my tech news, but for general overall news this is the best.

Good but a few bugs and issues

I really like Google news, the interface is nice and simple to use and the recommended stories works well. But, there’s some irritating frustration on the iPhone version, for a start some publishers articles can’t even be read, such as gamesradar, they only show a few lines of text with no way to jump to the actual article. The interface vertical scrolling also sometimes stops feeling smooth and fluid, like it’s got a bit of glue stuck to the back of the page, and sometimes just appears completely blank halfway down the page you’re reading. Finally, there’s an annoying hidden back button on the left edge that constantly gets in the way of tapping and seems to serve no purpose. Fix those issues and it would easily be a 5 star app.

Was fantastic until an annoying bug emerged

In a time where I decided to come off social media due to the constant manipulation and surfacing of unwanted content. Not to mention the toxicity of social networks and algorithms that only show you one side of a story this app has really helped keep up to date with relevant news. The app learns, and does so well, what interests you have and news you may want to see. And does of good job of promptly removing those you don’t if you tell it to.

The ability to swipe across fundamental stories in order to see what other outlets and opinions there are is really powerful in a world where media is often driving an agenda.

However, recently, the app has developed a bug whereby it often randomly returns you to the top of the list view. Sometimes when navigating back from an article. Other times just whilst scrolling. This EXCEPTIONALLY annoying as you can often be 10’s if not 100’s of stories down your view before completely losing your place by returning to the top.

Not a ground breaker I’m sure but frustrating enough to warrant my leaving this review which is not something I do often.

A great app, let down currently by a recent annoying bug
