Poorly designed

This app is poorly designed as far as using on an Ipad is concerned. It forces you to use the portrait format, and there is no method of storing what you have read in any kind of library. Bookmarking does nothing, as when you turn off your device, it doesn't remember your book or the page place. Good points are that it does have all of the Grantas, but the interface is barren and not user friendly. Overall I would say Fail - this is like a beta version and Granta should do a serious redesign. I teach at an art college and if one of my students came up with this app, they wouldn't pass.

A triumph of style over function

It’s 5-stars for what the app does, namely gives subscribers access to a huge back catalogue of issues of Granta. There’s lots of happy browsing to be done here.

The app looks great, but using it is not at all intuitive.

There’s also no option to adjust font size, for example.

You have to go through a tiresome login regularly as it doesn’t remember your details. Mostly the login dialogue appears automatically, but when it doesn’t there is no way to force it.

You can’t swipe to the next article but have to go back into an index and access it from there.

And I note it hasn’t been updated in ages, which tells you everything about what a priority this is for Granta as well as their app developer. It’s as if there was a one-off budget to develop an app, but nothing set aside to keep refining it or responding to user feedback.

It’s a shame that such a refined and excellent publication is let down by an app that doesn’t match the aspirations of the magazine.

Awesome content, bewildering app

I’ve enjoyed reading Granta since I was first introduced by my favourite English teacher several years ago. The content they compile never disappoints; every issue is topical and compiles great content I would never have the time or resources to search out on my own. I’m happy to be a subscriber, and will remain so!

This app, on the other hand... yikes. There doesn’t appear to be any functionality as basic as reading offline or even searching for an article, although I can’t say for certain because the navigation and menus aren’t labelled or intuitive. You do get a nice quotation when you open the app, though. So that’s nice.

This app is somehow a step backwards from a print-and-paper copy, which is what I’ll stick to for now.
