I reviewed this a couple of years ago and gave it five stars because it was the best gym workout tracking app I’d use. It still is the best and it’s had numerous improvements since I last reviewed it. iCloud syncing is sooooo much better than the older way of syncing workouts. Mine synchs between my phone and two Apple Watches flawlessly, every time. Workout generation based on muscle regeneration works really well and there are downloadable workouts as well. I was going to say that workout generation based on available equipment would be a great addition, but I’ve just discovered that this option is already there too. This is a superb piece of software. As a developer myself, this is something the creator should be very proud of.
Replaced Excel tracking

I’m probably an extreme example, but before discovering this app, I used the mobile version of excel to track my progress, with complex formulae and graphs to track improvement. This KILLED my phone battery, using 60-80% charge in a single workout. Now that I’m tracking using Gymaholic, the phone stays in the pocket and everything is tracked on my watch, quickly, clearly, and while using none of my battery! I recommend people set up the advanced tracker settings to how they like it, because I found the defaults to be a little strange. Once you have it how you like it though you’ll never look back!
Good for me. New users’ mileage may vary.

I have edited this review from a scathingly low score from update 6.0, to one that reflects how good this app is for me. I downloaded this app in October 2016 and it is the best workout log I’ve ever used. Every minute change to a workout, from number of reps to weight to amount of sets, is logged and remembered for next time you do that workout. Moreover, for Apple Watch owners, the information can be logged via your wrist for phone-free workout. The app did as much as was required and very little else. Even the animations of a little green dude were useful for time-to-time in establishing decent form. I paid to upgrade to Pro to take advantage of more exercises and features as the app was that good. Fast-forward to September 2017, and update 6.0. Users were greeted by a reduction in functionality unless they opted into a new subscription model. Having already paid once under the old system, users were incensed and took to the review system and social media. Thankfully, the developer (quite rightly) grandfathered previous Pro users into the features provided by the new update. After all, it was these users who have been using the app loyally in what is a crowded marketplace. But where does that leave new users? Can I recommend this app to them? Well honestly, if it maintains the subscription model I don’t think I can. Milking a handful of users for subscriptions versus attracting a larger user base for one-off payments is not good for anyone. This app is (a few rough edges notwithstanding) good enough to go massive but, in my honest opinion, a subs model damages the accessibility required to make that happen. The core app is there: Marketing and partnership may be the way forward, not closing down the app to newcomers.
Perfect except for…
Titters dwelt
This app is almost perfect but has one major snag, namely the voice coach which comes switched on as a default setting. Working out how to turn this odious voice off is not straightforward and, worse still, if you’re using the app on your Apple watch with no headphones, the rest of the people in the gym will have to put up with this irritating voice too. And if you’re wearing headphones and listening to music, the final nail in the coffin is that this stupid voice interrupts the music track you’re listening to, and once it’s finished imparting its useless message, the music track doesn’t turn back on automatically. Please, please, please remove this voice coach as a default setting.
