Modern classic

I love game books. Always have, ever since I picked up a Jurassic park 'choose your own adventure' book when I was 6 years old, I've been captivated. Heavy Metal Thunder is a great addition to the Gamebook genre. While it doesn't add anything we haven't seen before it arranges it's building blocks so smoothly, handles it's narrative so skilfully and conveys it's style so convincingly that it all comes together brilliantly. Everything is geared towards streamlining the experience without sacrificing immersion. It's a joy to play and the choices come thick and fast and feel important and there's a lot of content for your money. It doesn't re-invent the wheel but it handles like a dream.

Great

My son has loved working through this. More importantly it's the first entertainment app i have used in ages that isn't 'pay-to-win'. Looking back at my app buying habits I have simply stopped buying games as in-app purchases have ruined the game dynamics. This is a perfectly formed, self-contained gem.

A great sci-fi CYOA (which this isn't) would be great

I bought this, lured by the attractive art style and promise of a serious bit of sci-fi action with Choose Your Own Adventure trappings... such a thing, perhaps akin to a Peter F Hamilton or Alastair Reynolds novel with interesting break points and bit of skill testing would be pretty darn awesome.

Sadly, this really is neither. The story is shonky at best and seemingly written by someone with English as a third language. The dialogue is preposterous and littered with appalling cliches. It's like the author decided he had had enough after writing the first few paragraphs and then just started churning out whatever mess was running through his head at the time.

I have just finished the fourth chapter and this piece of writing appeared: 'She leans forward ever so slightly and her moundy-round orbs push out against her dress, handfuls begging to be ripped off her torso and eaten.'... Followed shortly after by... "Please don't bother me for a minute boys, I need to take a dump".

Lazy, cliched, repellant in parts, farcical in others... a good job it only cost a couple of quid, but you obviously do get what you pay for in this instance.

Now, if only Neal Stephenson could be convinced to do something along these lines...
