CamRanger Compatibility

This app is pretty excellent in terms of functionality and usability. Though, it is really restrictive on what cameras it works with, it would be an amazing idea to make it able to connect with a CamRanger (CamRangers typically connect cameras to IOS devices wirelessly using wi-fi signals) that way we can plug the device into any camera we want and connect it to your app, which is much better that the official CamRanger app.

Complete rubbish

This app is appalling, especially as it’s a premium priced app. I’ve tried a number of images with terrible results. The far focus distance overshoots, nothing in the middle of the shot is in focus after a stack. Avoid this. It’s expensive and does not work

Try before you buy

This is a focus stack controlling program for many Nikon and Canon DSLRs. It is not tied to Helicon Focus as your stacking tool and will work equally well with Zerene or Affinity, it is there simply to remotely control the camera.

The software does what it is supposed to do in the current build (December 2017), but bugs seem to creep in from time to time and I would strongly suggest that you turn off auto update in the App Store if you are going to depend upon this.

The really good news is that you have full functionality in the trial version with the only restriction being you can just take small JPEGs so you can thoroughly test the software with your set up to ensure it meets your requirements. This is essential because there seem to be all sorts of quirks arising out of the differences between different models of camera and the weakness that Apple only permits a Wi-Fi connection to the camera. If you have any choice at all just believe me and use software on a laptop with a USB lead! However if you are constrained to use an iOS device then test this thoroughly and if it works for you, groovy.

A few tips to make help you make the most of this:
- Set focus points at maximum aperture. Live view (on my camera anyway) is a stopped down view and it makes it nearly impossible to focus accurately!

- Tell your iOS device to forget the local Wi-Fi network, otherwise when the camera Wi-Fi wobbles your device will reconnect to your home/office network and all will be lost. (But be sure to know the password to reconnect!)

- Set your camera’s time out to half an hour or more otherwise again it may well drop the Wi-Fi connection.
